how much ammo is too much ?

My problem is I store most of my ammo upstairs...... The gf commented yesterday on how she was beginning to get scared that the floor may give way. I'd guess there's 10000 rounds in that cabinet and another 40 or so boxes of 12 guage stored separately.....

Too much ammo is like too much ###...
If your car gets in the way of stockpiling more in the garage, swap it for more and use wifey's ride. Any good wife will understand.

you actually park in the garage

I have a truck that wont fir in the garage because of the back rack, and I told the wife her truck just won't fit in the garage so stop #####ing at me to clean it out :D

What constitutes a reasonable amount of ammo, loaded and ready to go at home? That's Easy.
If you shoot IPSC or IPDA, and practice 2x per week with 300 round sessions, that is 600 rounds per week used. Simple math tells us to keep 3 times that amount on hand for when we take friends to the range, and double that when chronoing and doing load development.

By that logic, at least 2000 rounds ready to do is required, and double that on the shelf in case you have loading problems or a poor load, or simple want to load only a couple days a month.

So that should mean 5000 loaded RTF rounds.

Then again, if more company comes up, better increase that figure. Add 1000 rounds per houseguest!

Sound logic, but I have found that an increase of 3000 per houseguest is required, as they tend to invite friends to bbq parties, and those friends tend to want to shoot a round, like it, and fire between 500 and 1000 rounds in a sitting.

How much is too much

I have used mathematical calculations where E= Enemy, A=Ammo, Y is the present year, divided by 2 ('cause you're gonna share with me for going through all this trouble). So, since there are exactly 17,231 proven enemies (gathered from the latest long-form census), and the year is 2010, given that A=(E*Y)/2, too much ammo is: A= (17231*2010)/2, too much ammo is exactly 17,317,155, which can consist of rimfire, centerfire and shotgun ammo, but does not include pellets, bb's, paintballs or airsoft.

I know, I know, I have WAYYYY too much time on my hands, but it does give us a nice, scientific number to use to tell our spouses why we need more ammo. BTW, given that this is the end of the long-form census, I won't be able to perform this calculation ever again.

You are so right. Time to load s'more... there is company coming!:D

I laugh at the newspapers when they ''sieze'' ammo. 200-300-400 rounds WOW< OH MY GOD!

WTF are they thinking? 2-300 rounds shooting IPSC IPDA or even skeet is only a good start.. like practice time.

SERIOUS shooting requires at least 500 Rounds per day.... something the anti's will never get because they will never know the pleasure that comes from shooting 25 straight at the 27.

Makes me feel sorry for them. They will never 'get it'

According to Explosives Regulations, C.R.C., c. 599:

As far as I know, nobody has ever been charged with violating this section.

So I have ordered up :

5000 rounds .45
5000 rounds 9mm
20,000 .22LR

All stored legally at home to be used over time at the range.

Does this go beyond the definition of a "reasonable" amount of ammunition to be stored at home ?

In my opinion, you don't have enough. :p I would ad a zero to each figure...then invite me over for some shooting. hahah

Serious answer: you are completely ok. :)

You're nowhere near approaching "reasonable", brother. I don't see a single round of 12ga. mentioned in your cache. Any self-respecting gun owner has at LEAST 750-1K rounds of of 12 ga. slugs and target shot sitting around at any given time. If your wife shoots 20 ga., you'll be needing closer to 2K rounds of assorted shotgun ammo to earn the title of reasonable.........;)

:D:D

HA HA ... you guys are great....based on all your positive encouragement I decided to substantially increase my ammo order : )

... and added 4 cases of 12 GA ammo too :D

I was going through the reloading room in my garage. I am shocked at the quantities of powder and primers I have.

Only 50 lbs of powder (splitbetween SG and HG) and only 35,000 primers. :( Looks like I have been doing some shooting this year.
