Can i Bring Handgun Ammo that i purchase in the US Back into Canada?

And if so how many rounds can bring?

Do you need a special licence to buy Handgun ammo in the US?

That's only HALF the equation you need to worry about; unless you have a Form 6 (Authorization for a Non-Immigrant Alien to Posses Firearms or Ammunition) issued by ATFE in the US, it's ILLEGAL for you to buy ammo in the US now. From the Canadian side, I THINK the limit is 5000 rounds, but they still expect all taxes/duties, etc. to be paid.

Oh man. This is a good one. I got into some wierdness a few years ago about this. I called Canada Customs and they advised me that I could bring back up to 5000 rounds of any type or combo there of, as long as I did not exceed 5000 rounds. I went to Watertown and bought 200 rounds of 9mm and 200 of .45. It was all cool until I told the custom's people on the Canadian side of the border what I had purchased. They emptied my car and kept me there for almost three hours, only to tell me that "they wanted to make sure I hadn't brought back any guns". Arseholes! Anyway I vowed to go back and do it again out of spite, however I have since found out from talking to people on this site and from doing research on the WWW, that according to American law, it's a federal offence to leave the country with ammo. You can buy it there but you have to use it there. Now that being said I really don't know how they'd catch you, and I have still considered doing it again from time to time, but it would be a ####ty risk I guess if you're caught. The ammo is soooo cheap though.

Yeah, that's the rub all right. It is tempting but.....if you're caught, you would really be in deep doo-doo. They could catch you if, as they periodically do, they decide to stop and investigate/search every vehicle leaving the U.S.; ie. while you are still on U.S. soil. I don't think they do it very often. I have never seen it done myself but I have heard of it being done. Is it worth the loss of your vehicle? That's the question. Hmmm...

what about reloading components? does the same apply to bullets, brass, etc.
i recently moved to within 4 miles from the US border and thought of running down to get my spring bullet supply. like you said its so cheep down there.

Not exactly.......

I do believe that black powder is still legal to bring back from the U.S. What a bunch of Jerks.....Is Osama going to use a firearm in the U.S.....not in my life. He or his terrorists will use something much more destructive. Meanwhile the good old firearms enthusiasts will take it in the ear.....every time. Man, what a mess!
Eeeee-Ha!

Those periodic checks suck, it's happen to me 3 times! Was coming back from a buddies place and the state troopers and border patrol we're setup about 2 miles from the border. And they bloody ripped my car apart, gave me a hard time for having a tool box in my trunk and a case of molson canadian. they ripped the door panels and back seats out and and then just threw them in the back and said leave when they didn't find anything. Bastards!

So I wouldn't screw around with those guys!

Just my 2 cents anyway

Did they get your permission to search you car? I wonder how legal this is and how the law applies. What border was this at? What time?

Don't mess with the US. For the most part what you have read
is true. However my son and I shoot in the US quite often, we have
often compete with a Border Patrol Supervisor. This is what I got
from him, your 6N form not only states your firearms but the make
and quantity of your ammo. He basically said if you have any more
or any different ammo than is described..........look out. You mess
with these boys once and good luck getting back into the US. We
have on a number of ocasions been followed to the border by the
BP but not yet stopped:redface: One thing we always do is cross
at the same border each time. as someone has already quoted'

As an illegal alien LEO in the US have the right to stop you for whatever reason they see fit, their country, their rules. Your not a citizen of their country so your percieved rights are not what they appear.

what about reloaded ammunition you take over to go to a match? How can they determine what you bring back?

But I am not illegal ... I entered USA with their permission. I am a visitor from a friendly county. I believe I should have more rights. (Although I know you are probably right.) I doubt we treat USA citizens like that in Canada.

There's alot of info regarding the US gun laws and legalities for us Canadians on the BATF website. There are lots of rules, and most of them don't make a lot of sense. Basically its their country and we are visitors so they have the right to search, ask questions, detain etc for all sorts of reasons, even if you have legally entered their country. As far as going to the US to shoot matches using reloaded ammo, I've heard from a buddy that shoots IDPA matches in Grand Forks, ND that bringing in reloads is okay, and leaving the country with some reloads are okay, as long as your paperwork is in order. However, you can't load up on ammo while you are down their and then claim it coming back through, you'd be violating several laws....buying ammo illegally. Your Form 6 doesn't cover that but will cover your own personal ammo to bring to matches. My friend always trys to bring what ammo he needs for the match and no more just to avoid any hassles with having to bring back any ammo back across. Its a little gray area, I'm not sure the exact nature of the laws, perhaps I can do some digging or some of the guys that shoot matches in the states can chime in.....
