How much interest in a Canadian limited edition Ruger No.1?

I just read something on the Cast Bullet Association website by Gunwriter C.E. Harris. He states that when he worked for Ruger they made Ruger #1's and 3's in .303 British with .30 cal bores FOR SALE IN CANADA.

This was built in Ontario for me when I worked at the NRA and imported through a US dealer. It has an offset side scope mount with rail which accepts Ruger rings. I use a Weaver 4X Classic for hunting, but the rifle can be stripper clip loaded with the scope attached, and I can also use the iron sights, a Pattern 14 front sight, with Mk.I battlesight. It used to have an A.J. Parker 8/53 backsight conversion on it, but I sent that to Italy so our mutual friend Giorgio could enjoy it. I use the rifle as a cast bullet plinker now, but having a barrel of normal 7.62/.30 cal dimensions I have a much wider choice of bullets. So it is sort of a 30-303.

No problem shooting normal .303 factory loads in the tight barrel. Bolt opening is easy with no pressure signs. Velocities are where they should be. When I was at Ruger we made some No.1 and No.3 single shots for the Canadian trade which used normal .30 cal. barrels and we shot pressure tests with test barrels of standard SAAMI .303 British and with tight-bore pressure barrels using .308 blanks. The pressure rise was in the order of +3,000 to +3,500 psi, which is well within the design limits of a sound action.

I don't know about you guys here, but I sure do not want a Ruger #1 with a .308 bore in my rifle! It sure maybe safe, but did they do any testing on what happens to the copper bullet after it leaves the muzzle??? It may be safe, but what happens to that bullet may change what the bullet was designed to do!!! I have put my order in for 2 of these, and I am an man of my word, so if they come with .308 bores, I have alot of testing into tellephone soaked books with the bullets I choose to load I guess. Why do Americans always go against what has always worked well? Just so the don't have to make a new reamer for the barrell machinery, what a cop out that is. Many of you may disagree ,but swagging down the 303 bullets by 4 thou. must change the way that bullet performs on game, hope this gets you men who are more knowledgable than me to awnser this question, Dale in T-Bay

Wonder where they ended up?

.303 #1

I don't want to steal anyones thunder here..(actually there is no thunder yet, not even a rumble)
I just returned from the shot show where I spoke to a Ruger VP. He advised he has heard no talk of a #1 in .303. He further stated that Ruger 'planning dept' expects to introduce a new cal to the #1 lineup each year for a one year run. Numerous calibres have been discussed but he expects that a .303Br would be well down the list!

I explained that what I was referring to was a request by a distributor for a special run of guns, not that we were requesting Ruger to build the #1 in .303 on spec. The VP allowed that such a request would indeed be a different issue that would have to be discussed at the board level and would be dependant on what other projects Ruger were initiating on their own products.

Anyway, he didn't rule out the possibility all together.

I also spoke to Lipseys. The average salespersons present knew zip about this, but I finally spoke to one of their managers who as I understood it , is aware of the discussions with Clay on this incentive but that Lipseys has yet to broach Ruger on the matter, waiting to the conclusion of the shot show which has seen every firearms related company/business in the US up to their A___s in alligators.

Soooo...no news is good news I guess. Haven't been told no yet!!

Ok, just got an email from my Lipseys rep. Here's the good news:

"We did get to talk to them about it and the the meeting went pretty well. The only news right now is that they are trying to decide if they want to give it to us as an exclusive or put it in the line."

Now, that is good news; bad news is, we don't have the 'yes' we need to start taking deposits. I'll try to get more news by days end.
