It's an 1896 mauser. it's in 7mm Mauser cal

says: MOD. MAUSER 1896. LUDW. LUEWE & C2 BERLIN on the reciever

any idea whats it's worth? when it was made? anything special about it?

I think it's in pretty nice shape. absulutly NO RUST OR PITTING anywhere and still has good blueing although I don't know If it's original blue or not but I belive it is. (the stuff you can see on the bolt in the pics isnt rust. It's some kinda dirt or gunk or something that I can't get off)

anyway heres some pics.

ok well I looked over and I found some numbers, I dunno if their the ones im supposed to get but whatever. they are diffrent. but they arnt even simlilar. the one on the reciever is nicely fit together "A 3258" while the number on the bolt is weirdly spaced out and has no letters. it's got a symbol of some kind then a 6 a space then 360

well I don't know what the heck headspace is or how to check it but ive shot it and it shoots fine as far as I can tell.

if it can be checked without any tools or anything then I'll check it someone can walk me through how.

You need a gauge. Any gunsmith should have one for the 7x57.

Here is a link that explains it better then I could!! BTW excessive headspace is very dangerious potentionally!!

what you have is a boer war veteran, sold to the Zuid Afrikaanse Republik. value of these guns are usually rather high. Ive seen them for over 1000$, but a price of about 600$ +- should be more realistic. It all depends on supply and demand. whered you get this beaut if you dont mind asking?

I believe that this is what green is referring to although this is off of a cavalry carbine.

Anyone here remember the serial number range for ZAR contract 1896 rifles that got delivered before the remainder were diverted to South America?

(interestingly, they are not conventional Mauser 96's like the Swedes, but rather M1895's marked as 96's for some reason lost to time?)

I do remember that Leowe S/N 1 through 5000 were carbines. At some point deliveries to South Africa stopped and the remaining rifles made by Leowe and Oberndorf were sold to Chile as part of that contract.

Going from memory here as my reference material on Mausers is on loan - someone has the info here I'm sure...

The first 20,000 rifles delivered in 1896 to Z.A.R. were rifle serial number ranges A1 - A10000 & B1 - B10000

ok well I talked to my buddy (it's his gun) apparently he's brought it to a gun smith and the headspace is good and the rifling is at about 90%.

Also (you might wanna sit down for this) guess how much he paid for it? ............................................................$25  yup thats right he paid a whole 25 dollars for it. He bought it from some native off the reserve.
