How much love is out there for the Savage 99?

Savage 99

Personally, I like 'em.

Got a 99F in .308 Win with pre-mil serial number. Date of mfg is my birth year, which made the acquisition kinda cool.

These were only made from '65 to '70. They are model 99 PE or DE but the receivers are marked 99M. I was told this was a DE citation grade but the wood makes me think it's a PE presentation grade. Regardless which it is, It's the nicest savage 99 I've seen.

If you get a chance to try one before buying it, do that. I've seen some that gave excellent hunting accuracy, but I bought one in 308 (can't remember the variant) that I could never get to shoot satisfactorily. Minute of moose was about the best I could do with it, with every factory and hand load I put through it.

Bought one in the early '70's with a repaired stock in .303 Savage, for 60 bucks at a gun store just south of Englehart, ON. A very mooseable rifle.

I have 2

One in 250-3000 (250 savage) with a brass round counter and a 308 with the removable clip. The will be with me till I die

This was a recent gun show buy, a take down 250-3000, circa 1927, totally original finish and unmolested. Had her out to farm this weekend exceptionally accurate shooter with the vintage 87 grain pills I had with me. I really like this one.

I am up to three and a half now. A 99f in 300 savage which I hunt deer with, a 99eg in 250-3000 and a 1915 1899h in 22hp which after 103years still shoots great. The half is the savage .410 barrel that goes on the 1899h. Still lots of parts available for them as well which can help. I had to get a cocking indicator and spring for the eg. I prefer the pre 1960 as the workmanship is beautiful. I hear the triggers can be adjusted which is a plus for a lever gun. Lots of variations in models caliber and features which keeps me coming back.

While I really like the 303 for its long case neck, allowing heavy cast bullet loads, I'm NOT a fan of the 99's looks. That, however, may be because I grew up with my Dad's 1940's Model 94 EWC & my cousin's LEC with straight grip stock, carbine magazine & short barrel. That, plus Dad's constant griping about my uncle's (his B-I-L's) Model 99 in 300 Savage.

Now, if I could only find / buy a Model 94 that someone has already converted to 303 Savage!

;-)

She bee ahhh sweetie.
Nice score.

I have presently have 4.
a 250-3000 EG made in 1950
.243 F 1957
.300Sav M-DL 1961-that has only had 3 shots thru it. I bought it about 15 yrs ago in E Ont and story is that a woman bought it for her Lawyer husband so he could go to her family's deer camp. 3 shots were fired to sight in, he never shot a deer and had no interest in the sport. Gun sat in the closet until his passing, I haven't shot it either.

The unicorn is a .375 C-DL with a clip! Serial # says it was made in June/82 which would put it towards the end of production as the C-DL was last cataloged 1980. David Royal (author) says workers were making off the wall variants with left-over parts when a line was discontinued and he has seen an octagon barreled .375-99 that he knows came out of the factory. Who knows, it is the way I bought it 20yrs ago and shoots great.

I have 2 now on the left a .243 and on the right a .300 that was originally my grandfather's. I feel as though it's only the start and there will be more to come

Love them or hate them they were ahead of their time. I don't even know how many I've owned over the years but I still have the first one.
I used my 99a in 250-3000 for deer and dogs for many years with 2 different hand loads. It's the only tang safety model I kept, because it was my first 99 and because of the faster twist barrel than previous 250Sav rifles.
