how much of an issue is rust on gun?

Yeah, good advice here. I too hate rust, but it's really easy to go overboard and do more abrasive damage to the remaining finish, while trying to remove a few select spots on the outside.

It is probably even more common for shooters to go overboard on lubing the action, because of the "fear" of unseen rust that could ruin their gun... All of that lube attracts and holds dust and dirt, creating a gummy build up leading to mechanical failure and excessive wear... You want your action to have a "thin" film of protection but run it as dry as possible... And avoid WD-40... Please.

Stainless is painless!

As HoytCannon mentioned above, leaving a cold or wet gun in a gun case at the end of the day is the worst thing you can do. That one practice ruined many a gun! All my hunting shotguns are blued and I have never had a problem with rust as long as I have ensured they are dry and room temp before storing them. Doesn't hurt to give them a quick touch of gun oil either.

A bit of rust makes no difference, but sh*t does happen in the outdoors and its sometimes hard to keep your firearms dry and clean in all weather conditions. I carry an oily cloth in a film container or ziplock baggie in ALL vehicles and backpacks. Even a 30 second wipe at the end of the day with a greasy rag will help prevent surface rust until you have time for a good cleaning. For wet rainy/snowy days, I cut the fingers off from latex gloves to use as little condoms over the muzzle.

Nothing works perfect, but a few small efforts can help to keep things from rusting away.

Solid advice friend!

Cheers......

I wipe mine down every night when I'm at the camp hunting. There have been a few days when Ive been out in the rain for hours on end, and once I even fell in the water over my head. I took it apart dried it and oiled , its never rusted up on me yet.

WD-40 is a penetrating oil that can kill primers-that said-rust outside is cosmetic (by and large) -rust in bore-not good...

My word I'm jealous...beauti

A rusty surface on a gun ruins my enjoyment of that gun. But it is cosmetic, not a functional issue. I have found the synthetic gun oils much superior to standard mineral based machine oil for rust prevention. Something like Eezox will keep that rust from spreading.

I use basically all stainless guns, a few of them stay in my truck for weeks, whether wet or not. Some parts rust. Its never bothered me. It certainly doesnt make it shoot any worse, and thats all I tend to care about these days. Cosmetics is so far down my list I just cant be teared up when I see a splotch of rust on my guns now.
