How much vension do you eat?

3-4 dinners a week, left overs for lunch. Usually get my 3 deer each year. Two deer can get me through the year when I ration,,,,three allows me to eat it as frequently as I like.

Just making a pot of moose spaghetti sauce for supper, had some barbecued moose tenderloin on Monday for supper. I cooked a moose roast at camp the other weekend when me ,a buddy his son were up fishing for the weekend. We eat wild meat deer, moose, goose, grouse etc about once a week.
How often/much of what you shoot do you eat?
I don't hardly eat wild game. All or most I donate to needy or less privileged people. This year I donated my whitetail buck to a retired couple with a very low fixed income. I could tell that they were most grateful, especially when tears were streaming down their face.

The Province increased the share of hunts for non-resident hunters employing Guides. It was already hard enough getting draws as we have had an overall increase in the number of resident hunters (which is a good thing!!).

Basically the bc liberals suck fat moose balls, and if they had their way the only people allowed to hunt would be rich foreigners who can fork out $20 000 to go moose hunting...

That is awful. Have a buddy who just got a job roping cattle near prince george. will have to tell him about this as he was very excited about all the big game he was going to hunt. here in ontario he would get a moose tag almost every year. he complained about having to drive 4 hours north to do it but he'll lose his lunch after i tell him about this.

what game do you guys get to hunt every year?

Your buddy in PG will still be able to hunt moose/whitetail/elk/mule deer/black bears/ upland and migratory birds with an over the counter tag every year.......

Phat Eagle hasn't looked into it and seems a bit uninformed with hunting in BC, almost all the allocation decisions were reversed anyhow, and all the following were before and remain now over the counter, non-draw tags in BC you can hunt every year. Only heavily pressured units and species are draw, the majority of the province remains over the counter for many species, there are more over the counter tags available to residents in BC than any other province, and by a large proportion. He moved to the best province for hunting so no need to worry for him.

Over the counter tags, every year in BC (before, and after allocation changes, and after they were changed back again),

-Moose
-Elk
-Whitetail deer
-Blacktail deer (up to 15 tags a year)
-Mule deer
-Bighorn sheep
-Thinhorn sheep
-Mountain goat
-Black bear (two tags a year)
-Cougar
-Caribou
-Lynx
-Wolf
-Small game

Draws,

-Bison
-Southern / populated areas moose
-High pressure sheep areas
-High pressure goat areas
-Grizzly bear

Moose is our main meat year round, supplemented with deer, elk, grouse, bear and salmon.

I've got 4 deep freezers ....we always have wild game meat! :)

Every ounce that we kill, except for the blood-shot/damaged stuff.

It varies from year to year, but this winter we've been eating deer about 3 times a week on average. If you throw bear, grouse and hares into the mix, that goes up to nearly every day. We do eat vegetarian meals once in a while, or eat at friends places, restaurants, etc. But if we are at home, we are basically eating game almost every day.

Venison has replaced beef for my house this year, I took two deer this year so I have lots. I eat it almost every night unless we have chicken for a change.

I'd eat it all the time if I could get enough game... Draws are hard to come by after the Province of BC sold out to the Wilderness Guide Lobby :(

????? I can, and often do, shoot 3 deer a year in BC with over the counter tags. I could add another 15 if I wanted to travel to Haida Gwaii

Man, some of you guys eat a whole lotta venison! 50-100 lbs of moose and/or whitetail venison for us - two person household - per year. When it's 100 lbs that's a bit too much for my tastes - I'll share about 20 lbs with friends. If it's closer to 50 lbs I wish I'd hunted harder for another little whitetail! 2-4 dozen game birds, mostly pheasants and ducks with a few grouse, woodcock and one or two geese thrown in. Maybe a feed of rabbit or two if I get the mid-winter hunting itch, but not lately. If I could throw a turkey or two and a chubby little wild boar on the pile that would make me a happy man.
Cheers,
Dave

^^ Turkeys and wild boar - that'd be a great addition to the freezer!

Regarding your overall sentiments about venison - I have heard a lot of people say that about WT, but never moose!

We are a long, long way away geographically, though! :)

We eat wild meat almost exclusively, with a little commercial poultry and bacon etc. for variety. I have shot an elk every year for the past 18 years and sometimes a moose too. And usually a whitetail or mule deer or two. And several dozen ducks and geese. And pheasant and grouse etc. It's only my wife and me at home now, but we have three kids that eat a lot of wild game and I come from a large extended family and my ancestors were butchers, so I make a lot of sausage from the trim cuts and supply my family with a bunch each year.

I can't be bothered to read all the replies and I would hope someone already pointed this out...but you do realize that venison is deer meat right?
Moose isn't venison.
Goose isn't venison.
Grouse isn't venison.
Venison can be wild meat, but wild meat isn't necessarily venison.

I don't eat much deer meat any more as I lived off of it for years when I was younger.

I prefer Moose, Elk, Beef these days for regular table fare.

I looked this up because I wasn't sure about that definition. I call deer venison too!
from Wikipedia:
Definition[edit]
Venison originally described meat of any game animal killed by hunting,[3] and was applied to any animal from the families Cervidae (deer), Leporidae (hares), and Suidae (wild pigs), and certain species of the genus Capra (goats and ibex). In Southern Africa, the word venison refers to the meat of antelope.[4]

Merriam Webster says:

Definition of venison
plural venisons also venison

: the edible flesh of a game animal and especially a deer

Origin and Etymology of venison

Middle English venisoun “game animal, meat of a game animal,” borrowed from Anglo-French veneisun, going back to Latin vēnātiōn-, vēnātiō “hunting, game animals,” from vēnārī “to go hunting, hunt” (probably derivative of a nominal stem *wēn- “hunting, of the hunt,” lengthened-grade derivative of a verbal stem *wen- “wish, desire”) + -tiōn-, tiō, suffix of action nouns — more at venus

First Known Use: 14th century

Oxford:

Call it venison or call it something else ... but at my place we eat wild game several times a week. Probably 3 times a week with dinner, and at least as many with breakfast (homemade sausages, ground meat added to omelettes) and with lunch as well (home cured cold cuts, roast meat sandwiches, jerky, etc.). I guess that's what comes from putting one moose, two elk, and two deer in the freezers last fall :d
