How should this Mauser Kurz identify?

Which chambering and configuration for the Kurz?

Sure was Mig, it’s one of the OG chamberings. Little tough to argue with that. ;)

Noting the resounding support for the .250 from many well informed members, I’ll give it its fair shake. Ordered some 80gr TTSXs to get the speed I like and the trajectory plots pretty nicely with it. Look forward to trying it on a blacktail to start.

So it’s been rebarreled with a brand new heym barrel by Ralph martini, and in an original factory chambering which also happens to be an absolute classic……

Why not turn it into a 450 bushmaster or maybe something else chuck hawks would recommend?

The new cartridge names are racy enough to almost be worth it, gotta love marketing in the 21st century. HAM’R, Valkyrie, Legend, RPM… Dodge’s marketing team should take note, may hold out for the 6.5 Powerwagon, or a 7mm Warlock.

Got it covered.

Tewshea. ;) Nice rifle.

The 250 Savage is one case that really gains from being Ackley Improved, and you end up with very, very close to 257 Bob ballistics. - dan

Always a good option, was one of Ackley’s favourites it’s often said. Ordered 200 .250 Savage brass, look forward to getting to know the chambering and seeing how it stacks up to my favourite the Roberts in the field.

I've never hunted west coast deer and my experience with ttsx and tax in the 25 has been with the 2506 and far less than stellar. A softer bullet in the 250 savage driven hard may produce a faster kill and a better blood trail if tracking is required. The 250 savage is perfect for cup and core performance. If you plan on shoulder shots the Barnes may work satisfactorily

I don’t shoot anything I’m feeding to the family with lead in it, a personal choice. The Hornady 90gr CX is plan B, but the BC isn’t pretty.

I’ve heard the same on the 80gr TTSX in person from another guy whose opinion I respect. Blacktails locally are scantly more than wolf sized animals, so it’ll do for the purpose. If I like the rifle and it isn’t getting a change up in chambering, I may use it for sheep and would reevaluate the bullet at that point.

It’s actually been getting less interesting for years sadly! Gone are the double rifles and most of the antique Colts and such. Guns became less of a focus, starting to dabble and play more again, work had been too busy the last few years and took over.

Just trying to stick to interesting things.

Well she’s settling into her identity, just gained iron sights. Now she looks dressed to my eye, rear is a Talley peep, front is an NECG Masterpiece that was waiting for me when I returned from the last fire shift.

Was a rather exhaustive rust bluing process for such a small part, and she’s stayed a .250 despite having a .257 reamer 3’ away.

Is nice to see pictures how you did that! Is that old fashioned "rust bluing" or is that the "Express Rust Bluing"? Do you plan to use a hood on it? I presumed a hood would be done at same time, but maybe is done separately - and for sure seems much division about whether to use a hood or not, on a front sight
