The Ljungmann AG42/Egyptian Hakim rifles

Hi again fellows milsurp lovers:) No better time than a sunday afternoon to make another disassembly thread so for my last thread(dont have any more rifle to strip) let's have a look on the swedish AG42/egyptian Hakim.
IMG_0578.jpg

IMG_0579.jpg

We will use the AG42 but i took somes pics with the Hakim to show small differences. First, let's make sure the rifle is unloaded and clear. To avoid any AG/Hakim thumb, the safety should be put on first.
To put the safety on, flip the safety lever to the right.
IMG_0486.jpg

Push the rear cover until the cover click with the bolt carrier.
IMG_0487.jpg

IMG_0488.jpg

This is the little catch that lock with the bolt carrier.
IMG_0489.jpg

The safety in "safe" position
IMG_0490.jpg

The safety in "fire" position. See the part marked with the arrow? When the safety is on "fire", if the cover and carrier are pulled rearward, the lever on the carrier will bump the step marked with the arrow on the safety then the carrier/bolt will unlock from the cover and will drive foward violently, picking a cartridge from the mag and can also bite your finger if they are in the way..... So mag in or not, keep finger away! A "Garand thumb" maybe painfull but its nothing to compare with the "AG/Hakim thumb" Happened with the previous owner of my AG.... However, the bolt will stay open with an empty mag.
IMG_0491.jpg

So with the safety on, pull back the cover/carrier/bolt to the rear.
IMG_0492.jpg

IMG_0493.jpg

IMG_0494.jpg

Remove the magazine. On the AG42, the mag have 2 releases that need to be pressed to pull the mag out.
IMG_0495.jpg

IMG_0497.jpg

On the Hakim, unlatch and push the mag release.
IMG_0528.jpg

IMG_0529.jpg

IMG_0530.jpg

After the mag is removed, push the cover/carrier foward.
IMG_0498.jpg

Put the safety in middle position and pull the safetu assembly straight up away from the rifle.
IMG_0499.jpg

IMG_0500.jpg

Hold the cover firmly, with your thumb, push the latch to unlock the cover from the carrier then slowly let the cover move to the rear, remove the cover and recoils spring from the rifle.
IMG_0501.jpg

IMG_0502.jpg

IMG_0503.jpg

IMG_0504.jpg

IMG_0505.jpg

IMG_0506.jpg

Pull the bolt/carrier from the rifle.
IMG_0507.jpg

IMG_0508.jpg

Disengage the bolt from the carrier.
IMG_0510.jpg

IMG_0513.jpg

To remove the extractor, with a little screwdriver or similar object, push the extractor spring rearward and remove the extractor and the extractor spring/plunger from the bolt.
IMG_0514.jpg

IMG_0515.jpg

IMG_0516.jpg

IMG_0517.jpg

IMG_0518.jpg

On the Hakim, pry the extractor spring and push it foward, over the extractor.
IMG_0524.jpg

IMG_0525.jpg

IMG_0526.jpg

IMG_0527.jpg

The firing pin is removed by drifting the small pin at the rear, then the firing pin and spring can be taken out. Same for both rifles.
IMG_0519.jpg

IMG_0520.jpg

IMG_0521.jpg

IMG_0522.jpg

Unscrew the cleaning rod on the AG42.
IMG_0531.jpg

Basic field strip complete.
IMG_0532.jpg

Further disassembly.
To remove handguard on AG42, push the band retainer and slide the band toward the muzzle and lift the handguard away.
IMG_0533.jpg

IMG_0534.jpg

IMG_0535.jpg

On the Hakim, unscrew the bayonet lug and pull the lug/front band away.
IMG_0577.jpg

IMG_0566.jpg

The rear band is removed by unscrewing the band retainer then the band can slide away. Pull out the handguard.
IMG_0562.jpg

IMG_0564.jpg

IMG_0567.jpg

IMG_0568.jpg

The gas tube can be unscrewed from the gas block.
IMG_0536.jpg

On the Hakim, a jam nut need to be loosen to remove the tube. Also, the tube has flat sides to facilitate removal.
IMG_0571.jpg

IMG_0570.jpg

Once the gas tube clear the gas block, lift the tube a little and pull it foward, away from the gas tube bushing near the rear sight.
IMG_0554.jpg

IMG_0555.jpg

The AG42 have a screw on top of the gas block but its usually stacked on pretty tight so i never removed it on mine. The Hakim have a gas regulator.
To remove:
Use a screwdriver to very gently pry the lock spring so the gas valve can be unscrew without catching the stop mark on the gas block.
IMG_0572.jpg

IMG_0574.jpg

To remove stock, 3 screws need to be removed.
IMG_0540.jpg

IMG_0541.jpg

IMG_0542.jpg

IMG_0543.jpg

There's a loose bushing under trigger guard, be sure to put it back on reassembly.
IMG_0544.jpg

The rear sight is removed after loosening the screw and sliding the collar foward. Hakim have 2 collars but principle is the same.
IMG_0547.jpg

IMG_0548.jpg

IMG_0549.jpg

IMG_0550.jpg

The gas tube bushing can be unscrewed from receiver.
IMG_0551.jpg

IMG_0552.jpg

IMG_0553.jpg

On both model, the muzzle end can be unscrewed. On the AG42, the muzzle end secure a retaining pin for the front sight. To adjust the front sight, the muzzle end is loosened and the sight can be adjusted with the windage screw. The Hakim use a small set screw instead of the AG retaining pin. AG42 showing:

Reassembly of rifle is in reverse order. I hope the tutoral was clear and useful.:) Thankyou

Where those three bottom screws very hard to loosen? On my AG 42B they are so tight that I stopped trying so as to not damage the screw blade slots. Did you drift them a bit first, heat them up or use some sort of penetrating oil? Thx.

Thoses screws are somewhat stacked on. I used a quality screwdriver bit that fit nicely in the screw and screws went without problem. Sometimes, knocking lightly the screwdriver handle while turning loosen thoses screws easily, just be carefull to not hit hard on them, just litghtly. Usually a good bit its all that needed, put heavy pressure on the driver and the screws will come out without damage.

I made this video a couple years ago. Not nearly as in depth, but a 30 second guide of the quick field strip:

Very nice vid:) I saw someone pulling the cover/carrier together from the rifle, its ok if you keep the part under control but if you dont and push the unlocking button, the carrier can fly back to sweden! The good way is like you did and i did, unlatch the part when they are still in the rifle.

This happened to a friend of mine one night when we were cleaning guns at his house. The carrier blew through a plastic poker table and almost took his toe off!

Those are a great rifle for those with a self-destructive tendancy ... the Ljungmann thumb remover, the 'try to catch me' bolt carrier chuck...:D

tip for anyone trying to put their Garand bolt back together without proper tools...

slide the firing pin in. place ejector and spring in place, and extractor spring in its place. put the bold back end against your sternum with your non dominant hand. pinch a quarter between your thumb and index finger of that hand and use it to push the ejector in, then use the other hand to push the extractor in. Its kinda a tough move but can be done!
