Hi fellows milsurp lovers:) Snowing here today so no better time to stay home and take care of my Rasheed, bought from Wolverine surplus sale. I said to myself why not take pics and post on CGN,might be fun and useful(i hope):p The Rasheed was very dusty and sandy inside and out so needed a deep cleaning. Let's begin

As with any firearm, first is make sure the rifle is clear and unloaded. Pulling back the charging handle
IMG_0264.jpg

IMG_0265.jpg

IMG_0266.jpg

To remove the magazine, unlatch and pushing the latch foward will drop the mag.
IMG_0267.jpg

IMG_0268.jpg

IMG_0269.jpg

Now, pull the loading handle to disengage the bolt hold open device and slowly close the bolt.
IMG_0270.jpg

To remove bolt:
Put safety in middle position, push the action cover foward just enough so the safety assembly can be pulled straight up.
IMG_0271.jpg

IMG_0272.jpg

IMG_0273.jpg

Now, pull the action cover and recoil springs away from the rifle.
IMG_0274.jpg

Next, remove the bolt and carrier from the rifle and separate the bolt from the carrier. Now, basic field strip is done.
IMG_0275.jpg

IMG_0276.jpg

IMG_0277.jpg

Gas system

Remove the 2 screws of the barrel band and slide away from the handguard.
IMG_0278.jpg

IMG_0279.jpg

pull and lift the hanguard from the rifle
IMG_0280.jpg

IMG_0281.jpg

we can see the gas regulator
IMG_0282.jpg

To remove the regulator, i used an adjustable wrench but plier would be ok too. I will make an adjusting tool soon using a hand socket driver.
IMG_0283.jpg

While unscrewing the regulator, a small screwdriver should be used to very very gently, pry the retaining spring so the pring wont catch the mark and steps on the regulator base. Again, the idea is to pry the spring tabs just enough to unscrew the valve.
IMG_0284.jpg

IMG_0285.jpg

IMG_0286.jpg

IMG_0287.jpg

IMG_0288.jpg

IMG_0289.jpg

IMG_0290.jpg

To remove the gas tube.
Loosen the jam nut
IMG_0291.jpg

IMG_0292.jpg

On the tube, there's flat spot to grab the tube and uncrew it. I used Visegrip to carefully unscrew the tube but i will make a tool for that too.
IMG_0293.jpg

IMG_0294.jpg

Once loose, i was able to uncrew with fingers. Once unscrewed from the gas block, remove the jam nut and slide the gas tube to the rear and out of the rifle.
IMG_0296.jpg

IMG_0297.jpg

IMG_0298.jpg

IMG_0299.jpg

Stock removal.
To remove stock, first you need to pry the little locking device so the screw can be taken out. 3 screws need to be removed
IMG_0300.jpg

IMG_0301.jpg

IMG_0302.jpg

Trigger group
IMG_0303.jpg

Care must be taken to not loose that little bushing when the trigger group is lifted up.
IMG_0304.jpg

IMG_0305.jpg

Stock removed from the rifle.
IMG_0306.jpg

Since the Rasheed needed cleaning so bad, i removed the rear sight. To remove:
Loosen theses 2 screws
IMG_0308.jpg

Slide the collars and remove from the sight.
IMG_0309.jpg

IMG_0310.jpg

IMG_0311.jpg

Sight and handguard ferrule can be removed from the rifle.
IMG_0312.jpg

Once the rear sight removed, the gas tube bushing can be uncrewed with a large screwdriver. With the screwdriver, you turn it clockwise to loosen it than from the other side, can be unscrewed by fingers counter-clockwise.
IMG_0315.jpg

IMG_0316.jpg

IMG_0317.jpg

The received can be cleaned better now.
IMG_0318.jpg

The collar at the muzzle is reverse threaded.
IMG_0319.jpg

Bolt disassembly:
The extractor spring must be pryed and pushed foward, after the extractor can be lift out.
IMG_0322.jpg

After drifting the small pin at the rear of the bolt, the 2 pieces firing pin and spring can be taken out.
IMG_0321.jpg

After a meticulous cleaning and a bit of oil, the metal turned out very good.
IMG_0325.jpg

Reassembly is in reverse order for alls components. Of course this time, i did it as far as possible because was sand everywhere... Otherwise, basic cleaning only require the action cover, bolt and carrier out of the rifle. If shooting corrosives ammo, the gas valve should be removed for cleaning. In fact, removing the handguard and gas valve take only a min to do. The gas tube appear to be in stainless, so dont need to be removed after each shooting unless the rifle is put away for long time. Even removing the tube take only a minute. So after cleaning and oiling lightly, my Rasheed is good to go:cool:

IMG_0328.jpg

Hope you find it instructive:)

Anyone have info on how to properly strip a Garand for cosmo removal?

Wondering if anyone has step by step instructions for stripping a Garand right down? It has cosmo between the gas tube and barrel, on the sight etc, basically in every place it could be that's tougher to get at. The other thread about the Rasheed rifle made me wonder if someone would be willing to do the same for the Garand. Hopefully there isn't one already, I couldn't find what I wanted with the search function and the videos I found on youtube weren't for full disassembly.

Also there is a small crack in the stock beside the receiver. It has been previously repaired with a brass screw. What can I do to ensure that this crack doesn't worsen? Kind of too bad it is there, the rest of the rifle is in very nice shape and all the steel components are the same manufacturer and the stock is numbered to the rifle but the stock has lots of handling dings and the handguards are a different color than the stock.

If anyone can offer up some help I'd sure appreciate it!

Hmm a Garand striping thread, why not! I'm on it, will post today.:)

Garand disassembly

Hi again fellows milsurp lovers. I took time today to do another tutoral about milsurp disassembly so we will have a look on the M1 Garand.

IMG_0329.jpg

First, open the action to be sure rifle is unloaded.
IMG_0330.jpg

IMG_0331.jpg

A Garand tool kit is welcome if you have one but non entirely needed.
IMG_0332.jpg

IMG_0333.jpg

First, close the action. To do so, pull back and hold the operating rod, with your other hand, depress the magazine follower and carefully, close the action.
IMG_0335.jpg

IMG_0336.jpg

IMG_0337.jpg

The combo tool is very useful to remove the extractor with the bolt still in the rifle so let's see how to do.
IMG_0338.jpg

After pulling back the bolt, take the tool and rest the end of the tool(end with the little tang) against the bolt. The little tang must be just under the extractor then push the bolt foward, the tool will enter in the chamber a bit and will stop. Make sure you push the bolt enough so the tool will compress the ejector in the bolt
IMG_0340.jpg

IMG_0341.jpg

Screw a section of the cleaning rod in the tool to serve as an handle. Rotate the tool clockwise so the tool tang under the extractor will lift up the extractor from the bolt.
IMG_0342.jpg

After you can pull the extractor with your finger and also remove the extractor spring/plunger assembly and also the ejector and the ejector spring. When you unlock the extractor, be carefull to not loose the extractor spring or the ejector. Usually thoses will stay there. The firing pin can also be remove now or later, as you wish. To reinstall, put the firing ping in place, there a flat on the firing pin to allow the extractor to be fully seated in the bolt as the extractor lock the firing pin and the ejector in place. So insert the firing pin the proper way in the bolt, the ejector assembly and the extractor spring/plunger. Push the bolt foward to compress the ejector then reinsert the extractor in place. Note that the tang of the tool must be down so you can push down the extractor. The firing pin should move freely.
IMG_0343.jpg

IMG_0344.jpg

To remove the stock, graps the rear of the trigger guard and lift up to unlock the trigger group. Trigger group can be pulled out.
IMG_0345.jpg

IMG_0346.jpg

IMG_0347.jpg

Lift up the stock
IMG_0348.jpg

Op rod spring and magazine follower removal.
IMG_0349.jpg

Pull the op rod spring guide to disengage from the mag follower arm then remove the spring from the op rod.
IMG_0350.jpg

IMG_0351.jpg

Push the op rod catch pin, the pin only goes one way. Remove the pin.
IMG_0353.jpg

IMG_0354.jpg

Remove the op rod catch, the follower arm. Note the relation of the parts.
IMG_0355.jpg

IMG_0356.jpg

Remove the bullet guide.
IMG_0358.jpg

IMG_0359.jpg

Remove the follower
IMG_0360.jpg

IMG_0361.jpg

IMG_0362.jpg

reverse to reassemble.

To remove the gas cylinder, the combo tool is ideal but can possibly made with a large screwdriver.
IMG_0364.jpg

Unscrew the gas plug.
IMG_0366.jpg

IMG_0367.jpg

unscrew and remove the cylinder lock
IMG_0368.jpg

IMG_0369.jpg

slide and remove the gas cylinder.
IMG_0370.jpg

IMG_0372.jpg

To remove the op rod, there's a notch at the rear of receiver to allow disengaging the rod from the track.
IMG_0373.jpg

pull the rod up to the notch and disengage from the receiver and from the bolt also then the rod is free from the rifle.
IMG_0374.jpg

IMG_0375.jpg

IMG_0376.jpg

remove the bolt by tilting to the right
IMG_0377.jpg

Slide the front handguard from the barrel
IMG_0380.jpg

remove the pin from the handguard ferrule and slide the ferrule away.
IMG_0382.jpg

IMG_0383.jpg

IMG_0384.jpg

slide the rear handguard foward to free it from the barrel.
IMG_0386.jpg

IMG_0387.jpg

rear sight removal
IMG_0388.jpg

First, you may want to count how many click you have from the 100 yds setting to the aperture bottom position. So on reassembly, your zero will be same.

To take it appart: Move the windage fully to the left.
Remove the lock bar or outer nut, depend what model of sight you have. Careful, you may have a little sleeve and a spring. The sleeve have a flat to match the flat portion of the sight pinion.
IMG_0389.jpg

IMG_0389.jpg

IMG_0391.jpg

IMG_0420.jpg

To remove the graduation disk on the elevation knob, remove the screw and pull out the disk.
IMG_0416.jpg

IMG_0419.jpg

Unscrew the windage knob completely, pull out the elevation knob
IMG_0393.jpg

IMG_0394.jpg

pull out the apperture
IMG_0395.jpg

The sight cover can be pryed out aswell.
IMG_0396.jpg

IMG_0397.jpg

IMG_0398.jpg

The end result is a disassembled Garand:)
I think that's it, quite a long time i didn't take it appart. Hope that help :)

Great job!
I've done my fair share of garand stripping(i hope that didn't sound too weird:redface:)
I've also built one from parts...

The above applies to Ljungman AG-42B n' Hakims too

Ljungman AG-42B doesn't have an adjutable gas port. That screw is peened into place.

...I miss my Rashid!
Yes same patern as the ag42/hakim. I tried to get the gas block screw out on the ag but its peened damn tight!I will try to source a spare trigger connector for the Rasheed, if a part can fail, its supposed to be this one. The mag would not work well because the way was pinned but i did it the good way. I hope to give a steady diet of ammo for it soon:cool: You sold your Rasheed? How was the reliability and accuracy? Thanks.
Jocelyn

Jocelyn, thanks a lot for the help. I got it all apart no problem and was able to get all the cosmo out, cleaned up some safe kisses a little, fixed a crack in the stock, got rid of a bunch of old varnish on the handguard and re-oiled the stock nicely. Turns out there was a very nice Garand under all that crud! If the weather is sunny tomorrow I may have to post some pictures of it.

On a side note, to anyone else just learning, if you are going to boil cosmo out of parts, maybe don't dis assemble grouped parts first. I took my bolt apart and boiled all the parts together, obviously drying them thoroughly immediately. I lost track of the ejector and it wound up being lost. Lesson learned the hard way on that one. Either that or don"t boil parts small enough to end up down the drain!

Anyway everything else is spotless and re-assembled thanks to this thread, and a quick call to Marstar has a new ejector on the way and I'm only out $11 and a weekend of leaving the Garand at home, so all is well!

Thanks again!

I hope to see pics soon:) To clean small parts, i use i bit of lacquer thinner in a small glass bowl and with a little nylon brush, i clean the part and put them in a safe place until i get ready to reassemble, of course very hot soapy water work well and is ecological.
Jocelyn

Thanks for the tip! Definitely learned my lesson on that one, I knew better but guess it was just one of those things.
Pleasure was mine:) I have updated fews pics on the rear sight disassembly, about the elevation disk removal. Only need to remove a screw but i forgot to tell about. Now that i made the corrections, i'm happy with the tutoral:p
