The sticky above doesn't say how to tell the difference before buying: the $100 bids on E-bay are warnings but..... What markings or whatever should we look for ??

I'm not sure why anyone would say "Dont buy Leupold". Leupold makes as good a product or better as many manufacturers out there. What's the difference if their products have to go through Korth, chances are you'll never have to send it there, if you do the warranty is second to none.

Don't buy a Leupold, there are many quality brands with equal quality, price, and better warranty. Since any warranty must go through Korth, all brands have better warranty.

If you do not like Leupold products because of the performance or price then do not buy them. My experience however as a long time dealer of many optics brands, is that Korth Group have given us outstanding service and with all else being equal I would likely choose Leupold for the great warranty offered in Canada. There may be a couple consumers that would not agree with me however I believe the vast majority would agree that Korth offers excellent service. Phil.

I'll take a fake leupold any day over a vortex scope new in the box, hell I'd even pay for the fake one before I paid for the vortex

I think the Korth hate stems from their refusal to warranty certain grey market scopes that were not imported to Canada through them. This made many people upset. Korth has since changed their policy and will warranty everything now.

OP, you can find the vx1 on sale pretty often from one vendor or another. If you look around and wait a bit I'm sure you'll find a good price without having to worry about whether it's a the real deal.

How so nws?
I have only ever had to send three items to Korth Industries and never an issue.
The last was when I bought a Leupold Range Finder.
$300.00 for a Leupold RF and it didnt come with a lanyard.
An email to KI and three days later the same week believe it or not and there was this lanyard in my grubby Union Thug hands.
Nothing negative to say about those guys and the service they provide.
Rob

Only ever dealt with Korth one time. I sent a prismatic scope back to Korth that had some issues, they insisted I send all the little pieces and spacers.
I was actually missing one length of bolts for one of the spacer options and asked if I could buy some replacements, they said no problem and sent replacements screws free of charge on the way back, unfortunately they were the size I already had sent them thought, the other weird thing was some of the spacers didn't make it back for the return trip and the ones that did were a different color? They eventually sent the missing spacers but not before questioning me as to whether I had sent them in the first place, when I asked why some of the spacers were a different shade of black then the ones I sent they had no explanation..... Scope got fixed, service and attention to detail was sub par.

I have a knock off leupold on a rimfire, it's ok for that task, better than a barska anyway, but definitely not high end.

The turrets spin too easily, the leupold logo printed in white on the side doesn't look high end, but the glass is not bad for what I paid (not much). I haven't put much time into seeing how well it tracks, but haven't really had any problems... yet (knocking on wood). One of the illuminated reticle settings doesn't work, but it still has 7 or 9 other settings.

Why are these knockoff scopes even getting into the North American market in the first place. I see them for sale on Ebay, why is Ebay even knowingly letting these be sold on their website.

Maybe because people buy them....

I bought mine a couple years ago off aliexpress for something like $60-80. If I ever let it go I have no intention of selling at as anything other than a knock off, anyone can however buy these from China and resell. There are all sorts of knock offs however, leupold is just one of many. Not sure why your looking at scopes on ebay as the vast majority of them can only be sold within the US anyways.

I have a knock off Mark 4. The serial numbers were all the same number. That is how you knew back in the day when these were being sold off. Took it as part of a trade so no $ lost. BTW, it still makes a reasonable scope for practice as it holds zero for now. Would not take it on a major trip but for kicking about at the range, not bad. Certainly not able to sell it for leupold prices. And some day I will take great pleasure in drilling it through the cross hair with a 6br bullet at 300m.

Elky.....

It's something like a $500 billion global industry now. In simple terms, everything conceivable is being counterfeited, with a great deal of it unknowingly being sold to consumers at this point. Ebay simply doesn't have the time or manpower to police all the items, nor does the CBSA, RCMP, or anyone else that should be trying to stop the influx of this garbage.
