i thought that handguns were illegal except for having them inside you house and the cops knowing if you plan on taking them out. im new to guns and only have a .22 i was wondering how you get a license for a pistol in ontario. thanks a lot in advance

pull up a chair. you have lots of reading to do.

for starters, yes you can have them at home, yes you need the permission from the government to move your property. also the storage and transport is much more strict.

do a search on the site. if you can get it working. there is tons of info already posted.

so how can you shoot them at the shooting range?

See if your local gun club or shooting range puts on a handgun course. May be an opportunity for you to get some experience and try out a few before you commit to getting one yourself. Of course if you already have a non-restricted .22 then you have the correct PAL. Upgrade it to an R-PAL and you will be good to go.

Handgun shooting can be a lot of fun if you are willing to take on the responsibility.

NAA.

In order to get a handgun permit you must first write the Canadian Restricted Firearms exam, which, like your non-restricted exam consists of a practical and written portion. Both portions must be passed. The exam may be challenged without taking the course but if you are "new to guns" as you say, and have limited experience with them the the course is highly advisable.

Next you fill out and submit the application form, again like your non-restricted, complete with references.

Once they receive it they will call your references and call you, interviewing all of you in fair detail and they will do an extensive background check on you. They may also ask you if you are a member of a registered gun club since you may only shoot a restricted firearm at these facilities and they may ask to see proof of this.

Then if, and only if, the results of all these checks pass favorably for you will you receive your Restricted PAL.

Process For Obtaining A Legal Handgun For Target Shooting
The process for legally obtaining a handgun for target shooting can be long and complicated. However, it is well worth the effort as once the process is in place. You will be able to enjoy a very rewarding, challenging and fun sport. Following is a brief description of the steps involved.
Obtain an application for a "Possession/Acquisition License" – available at the post office.
Successfully complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (or challenge the exams).
Forward the License application with proof of Safety Course completion, passport photo and appropriate fees to the Canadian Firearms Centre in Miramichi, NB.
Police background checks will be completed as well as reference and spousal checks. If anything shows up on these checks, even if you were a victim of a criminal act (theft, assault, etc.), the application will be rejected and forwarded to the Chief Firearms Office (CFO) for further investigation.
If approved, license will be produced and mailed to the applicant (currently 4 to 6 months).
Join an approved handgun club.
Complete a mandatory Club level handgun safety course and serve a probation period.
Fill out an application for an ‘Authorization to Transport (ATT)' – club executive will forward to the CFO along with their recommendation for processing.
Further police checks may be done along with a second computer record check.
If approved, ATT will be mailed to applicant.
At this point, you may purchase a handgun from a sporting goods store or an individual. The registration must be called in to Miramichi for approval. The information is forwarded to the CFO for final approval and issuance of an ATT for transport from the vendor to the purchaser.
Handgun cannot be moved from the dwelling until an ATT is received allowing for the transport to an approved firing range. The permit is valid for one to three years and must be renewed at the recommendation of the Club executive.
To transport the firearm to any location other than an approved range i.e. gunsmith, border point for competition in the US, etc., requires the owner to obtain another ATT from the Chief Firearms Office.

For a list of area clubs and more information on the sport of Handgun Target Shooting, contact the office of the Canadian Shooting Sports Association.

I get the feeling that this is some sort of "set-up"..

If you are really wondering you should call your local shooting club and get some good advice.

There is no way this guy can own a gun and have this many stupid questions about owning a pistol

That was my thought too, especially if the OP is "new to guns". Having said that when I got my RPAL after having my PAL for a year there were still some questions that I had. At the time I wasn't a member here so I called the CFC, the local instructors, etc, and still had to review the Restricted Regs and procedures prior to the exam.

So my thoughts on this particular thread are mixed. My spidey senses say this is someone looking for anti-gun ammunition, if you will- looking for someone to give them advice on how to illegally obtain and use a handgun (you won't get that info here!). I must concede that there is a possiblity it's a gun newbie with questions. If the latter is the case, Welcome to the hobby!

There is just something off here, when I got my PAL I was made aware of the handgun licensing at the same time. And thinking handguns are illegal?!? None of this makes any sense

Benefit of the Doubt is not a concept you grasp is it?

As others have already pointed out the legal requirements to own a restricted firearms I would simply like to say welcome to the community.

Every lawful firearms owner is participating in a heritage as old as the human race. Stand proud and treat our heritage with the respect it deserves.
