How to get in the AR game

I did order 2 brand new Smith & Wesson 1 AR-15 and 1 AR-10 the price was right. This will cover me up pretty well in case the SHTF scénario.

Not to jump in here again but little tip keep an eye on nordic marksman and when they get those colt 6920 oems in. That is as good a deal as you are getting for a quality ar. Plus you get to then get the handguard you want along with the stock you want out of the get go and bypass the hassle of trying to move unwanted parts.

Haha that's exactly what I'm doing. Saw the first one came up for sale last week, but by the time I got home its all sold out. Now I'm waiting (im)patiently.

I built my first AR not too long ago.

Bought a stripped upper and lower and pieced the rifle together over the span of 6 months or so. It cost me about a grand........Stag upper and lower, DD omega handguard, raptor charging handle, TNA barrel, TNA BCG, Hiperfire trigger......the gun fits together exceptionally well and functions without fail.

Personally, I enjoyed the learning experience and the satisfaction of building the rifle up from scratch. With the knowledge that I gained, I am now confident I can build my 2nd (and 3rd and 4th and 5th etc) for considerably less $$.

I guess if you want to buy a complete rifle, that's fine and maybe I would even recommend it, depending on what you want to get out of it. As others have mentioned, you will have something reliable that you can "tinker" with and work on. A good baseline to start from.

That said, if I had bought a complete rifle, I likely would not have taken the time to read and research the platform and speak with those much more knowledgeable than I am, to learn more about the firearm I was using.

I grabbed one of the 10" IUR uppers from nordic last week...once i get my car fixed I'll finish it off (most likely keep it CC) it is my first AR, if I'm going to go restricted then I'm gonna get a shorty.

So following the advice and I picked up a Colt OEM kit from Nordic. I also got a handguard and optics off EE. Now I just need to find a suitable buttstock, and perhaps a set of BUIS sometime down the line to complete my AR.

However I do have another question. Is it safe to remove and reinstall the barrel nut by clamping down on the barrel? The handguard I bought from EE use a KMR barrel nut, so I need to change out the standard USGI barrel nut that came with the rifle. A kind CGNer has lend me a set of barrel and toque wrenches, and I do have access to a bench vice, just no action rod or upper vice block. I read somewhere you can just put the barrel in the vice to do it, and I just wanna ask what's you guys' opinion on this.

You can do it that way - and it may even be mentioned in some armourers texts to do it that way. But it's also a good way to scrape up your barrel, and pretty guns shoot more accurately. < j/k
A Magpul BEV block is not expensive and will last a long time, or for the same cost or less pay a shop to do it.

Buy the tools, do the job right.

Haha I already scratched up my barrel trying to remove the stubborn cross pins on the gas block, so that would be the least of my worry. Is there any concern about anything breaking or installing improperly?

I'm hesitant to buy a BEV block or something similar because it probably would take a while for it to get to me, and like I said the wrenches are borrowed so I don't want to borrow them for too long. I was wanna do it over the weekend so I can return them next week. I guess my other option would be having a gunsmith do it.

Saskatoon Gunworks just notified me that my preorder has arrived. M4E1 Aero precision lowers like this
https://www.saskatoongunworks.com/m4e1-stripped-lower-receiver-aero-precision.html

they look like billet, but are hella strong forged. waited over a year for these.

Hmm.. that is quite nice... tempting... Was hoping to eventually come across one with the bolt release on the right side near mag release or perhaps in trigger guard. But this has everything else I would enjoy.

Followed one of the suggestions, bought an LE6920 OEM kit and built up from there. Thought I will post the completed rifle here.
