I just finished installing a Brownell's oversize bolt knob on my Remington 700 SPS Tactical, and thought you might like to see the process. This is first time doing a gunsmithing job that could have been potentially disastrous if messed up.

In short, the steps are:
- file the original bolt knob into a square
- then file the square into an octagon
- keep filing corners until you have a rounded stud
- clean up the stud with Dremel and sandpaper
- taper the end
- thread the stud
- blue the bare metal
Tools used:
- 10" Bastard Cut File
- Dial Calipers
- 8" Rounded Mill File
- Dremel
- Sandpaper
- 5/16" X 24tpi Threading Die (this depends on your bolt knob)
- cutting oil
Time: About 2 hours.
Tips:
- cover the bolt in electrical tape to protect it
- clean your file regularly with a brass brush
- use sharpie to keep track of where you have finished filing
