I just finished installing a Brownell's oversize bolt knob on my Remington 700 SPS Tactical, and thought you might like to see the process. This is first time doing a gunsmithing job that could have been potentially disastrous if messed up.

In short, the steps are:

  • file the original bolt knob into a square
  • then file the square into an octagon
  • keep filing corners until you have a rounded stud
  • clean up the stud with Dremel and sandpaper
  • taper the end
  • thread the stud
  • blue the bare metal

Tools used:

  • 10" Bastard Cut File
  • Dial Calipers
  • 8" Rounded Mill File
  • Dremel
  • Sandpaper
  • 5/16" X 24tpi Threading Die (this depends on your bolt knob)
  • cutting oil

Time: About 2 hours.

Tips:
  • cover the bolt in electrical tape to protect it
  • clean your file regularly with a brass brush
  • use sharpie to keep track of where you have finished filing

I wanted to do this as well, instead I bought the knob from a Gunsmith and had em install it locally. 90$ 50 for install 40 for knob.

Looks good! I like diy projects. Even if it takes 6 months and you spend more money on tools and parts than it would cost to get someone else to do it. I get just as much satisfaction out of my projects as I do pulling the trigger.

Actually, it didn't occur to me. I think if I had though it would be touching my knuckle.

Actually I like the knob being slightly offset. Then again, I really like the "dog leg" of the old P13-17's. Just a personal thing but straight lines on mechanical items can sometimes be boring. That offset is nice, just my opinion.
