How to install the weaver bases?

how are they better?

I thought there were 2 systems; weaver and the one where you lock in the front end of the scope rings (don't recall the name)

I have 5 Farrell bases (3 on Rem's and 2 on Savages) and they work great.

Richard Near (canadian) also makes a nice base but I have not seen one first hand.

Using a Leupold system will limit you to Leupold rings only, if you want to have your choice of style and price in rings then go with a Weaver style.

slap on some weaver bases and leupold PRW rings, probably gonna run $80 total. If you can't afford that, wait until you begin to buy ammo

Luepold PRW rings and bases, weaver style, better made, not big $$

X2 on the g force farrell

I checked a few local stores and all they seem to carry are basic (cheapo?) alluminum weaver 2 piece bases...Any reason not to get them? I already have the scope and and just want to stick the thing on the gun so I can go out and shoot it, really don't want to wait another week if I order 'good' bases somewhere....so is there anything wrong with alluminum bases?

Got the stuff...now the QUESTION

OK...picked my my bases and rings today for my Rem 700 .308! :D I got weaver 2 peice (cheapo) bases and Burris 'extreme tactical rings' ...I'll probably get nicer mounts later on but still keep them for now.

Now the Question...does it matter wich way I install the bases? I got the right mounts but the front base is sticking out no matter which way I mount it, If I have the base numbers on the same side for both front (40A) and back mounts (36) the front base is sticking out at the side towards the muzzle, if I flip it, the base is ligned up with the end of the action but it sticks out past the action opening. What is the correct way to mount the front base??

EDIT: I just looked at weaver site and it lists 40A under 'Extensions' :S it's supposed to be longer?

Some scope/Rifle set ups require the extra spacing that the extension base would provide in order to acquire proper eye relief.
I also agree with todbartells recommendation for Rings/Bases (Leupold Weaver Style & PRW)
