How to keep hunters away?

People who own land/wood lots/hunting territory.

How do you keep hunters off during the season? - Whether you are present or not during the season.

I have woods on my property. I do not hunting it during some seasons. However I have noticed hunters pushing it. Not sure if these hunters are asking neighbours who also own part of the woods or not, but the fact remains that they have been walking over my land during their pushes.

Thoughts? Ideals?
Beyond positing no trespassing signs what else is there?

Do not really want be "that guy" but I doesn't seem right in my opinion.

Having been on the hunters side many a time I understand the need to get permission and what not.
I find it unfortunate for Ontario/Quebec hunters to have to lease their own hunting land. Compared to Quebec/Ontario, in western Canada there is more room to hunt and diversity of wildlife than you can shake a stick at. However, in Alberta there has been an increase in population which added to more hunting pressure and hunting interference. Therefore, contrary to keeping hunters away, I keep away from hunters. I hunt the most remote part of the province I can find where there is very little or no access for motor vehicles, such as pick-up trucks and ATV'S. Thick nasty bush is where some animals love to hide and where hunters hate to hunt.

Well said!

And this is the attitude that is going to kill hunting. The only people who are going to be able to hunt are those who are rich land owners and their friends who believe it should only be for them. Thank god I live in BC where I will be long dead before everything is privately owned but I would still want my kids grandkids to be able to enjoy hunting the way I did. They probably would come to your funeral if you became the famous nice land owner that was pro hunting. Bet they would talk about you in hunting magazines seeing as though you own enough land that could of bought you a fleet of Ferrari's and a life time of guided hunts. Bet if you got into contact with local fish 'n' game clubs, they would happily help you maintain the land in being able to hunt without permission. Hunting is a redneck thing to do and I would hate to see the day it becomes something only the rich can do. Not everyone can afford to go shoot a giraffe in Africa.

As I said, The land belongs to you so do want you want with it but if it was my land, I would think of ways to promote hunting. They're many ideas that could even bring in profit. Just a simple minded guy who comes from a village of less than 1200 people that prefer to look out for one and another rather then tell everyone to #### off.

I don't think you get it....As someone who has worked hard and owns his own land I see exactly where Dogleg is coming from... I have shared my land with many people... some of them fellow gunnutz... The difference is I got to choose to share it... The issue is not with people who want to hunt, it is with people who insist on trespassing on others' land without asking permission.... I know what it is like not to have a place to hunt and I will help out the respectful where I can... but set foot on my land without my permission and I will make a phonecall and charge you to every extent I can... plain and simple...

Respectful hunters would have requested permission before entering your personal domain. Post your boundaries and call the powers that be, let them sort it out. Booting people off your hard earned land is not being a jerk by any means, it is your right.

After working hard my entire life I'm now in a position where I've moved to a rural setting and have over 100 acres. People I choose to allow to use my land can do so but other, random or trespassing persons will be asked to leave. My land, my rules.

I wonder how many landowner/ hunters post so that they will be the only hunters on their own land. And then, expect to hunt elsewhere also???

I do!
I post my home 1/4 so I don't have to worry about my kids or ANOTHER horse getting shot.
And have over 4000 acres of private land all to myself if I want. Not counting the thousands of acres of my neighbors land open to the local clan.

Disrespect for other peoples property is what will kill hunting, not landowners. How many farmers out there ban hunting because people are trespassing, leaving a mess, bringing in more hunters than promised, etc, etc, etc. This entitlement attitude will kill hunting.

Just last month there was some trespassers trespassing on private land in Waterloo. The owners called the cops to scare them away and in return they decided to hang a deer head on their fence. As if us hunters aren't constantly fighting an uphill battle, #$%holes like this are ruining it for the rest of us. It was allover the local news and I don't think it moved hunting forward in the region's mind.

So, contrary to your belief, it's not some land barons buying up the land that is the problem, it's the idiots abusing and disrespecting landowners goodwill.

Keeping on track with the OP, I have a similar issue with a block of deer hunting property that my father and I bought - which is 4 hours away from where I live. As we are putting out feeders and mineral supplements, I dont want others on my property without our permission.

The Thunder Bay Crime Stoppers board makes a nice chloroplast (sp?) "Private Property No Trespassing" sign complete with red dot and Crime Stoppers phone number on it. They are about 11 x 17 inches and cost a couple of bucks each. We bought a bunch and posted them along the road access and cutover edge of our property. Unfortunately, I dont have a picture of one and cant find one on their website. They look good and support a good cause. I also advised the local CO's that no one should be on the property as well.

Although they dont show for sale on their website, if you contact them at the phone / addy below, you should be able to order some from them

Probably most of them. Just being a landowner in an area will open doors that will never open be opened to strangers and outsiders. That's the way it is.

EVERYTHING was privately owned land before Communism in former Czechoslovakia. Hunting was only possible for people who owned land or were friends with landowners. The average citizen could not hunt without pouching on someones privately owned land. Then the commies came and took everyone's land away. The commies then formed hunting club regions and made hunting more easily achievable for the average citizen. I will leave that argument at that.

I'm glad the OP is more optimistic than others.

Perhaps you'd like to live in a communist country. Then you could hunt wherever they let you.

yes, we all see how well communism works too. People had to hunt cause there was no food in the stores.

OP. Strategically placed land mines. Once one hunter steps on one the word will spread like Wildfire and I doubt you'd have any more trespassers.

Explaining the land mines to the authorities may be a bit tricky but some creative story telling should do the trick. Perhaps you have a deranged uncle or other relative that has since been incarcerated in a mental Institute that you could inject into said creative story.

Other than that, signs and game cams I guess.

If you come across them just tell them to get the F off your land. If they will not leave, phone the authorities. Your land is your land. They did not help you buy it, and they don't help you maintain it. Why should the few of us that own land allow city dwellers to just drop in and have a leisurely hunt on land that we sweated and paid for. The kicker on this is if you do not let them hunt on your land then you are a evil Robber Baron. Give me a break, there is a lot of Crown land to hunt on. Yet some people think that you should be able to hunt anywhere. The Doofus is strong in some folks,
