How to remove stuck case, without the case head?? Fixed!

A chamber cast would get that out. Do you have any cerrosafe? Can you get to a gunsmith?

The reason I blame the one shot,is because I had a stuck case, just a few days ago.
This one ,was no doubt a case head separation.

I love the stuff myself but it does require a bit of diligence to avoid stuck cases. I had a few .223 give me grief but since I started doing smallish batches and more time swirling I haven't had any complaints.

Thread a tap into the case; just enough to get a hard bite. Screw die back into the press and try a drift punch and hammer to drive it out. Wear your safety glasses; taps are harder than a whore's heart and a chip could have dire consequences in they met your eyeball.

It'll either come out or it won't.

I threw away all my spray lubes a long time ago.

Lots of different ideas, they all sound good.

As I had none of the items needed,I just made a trip to crappy tire.
This was the closest I could find.
I'm going to try Ganderites way first, if that dont work then the tap will be next.

It would've been cheaper to buy a new set of dies. LolView attachment 450081

A proper sized lag screw with a lrg washer screwed into the die deep enough to bite into the brass but not the die body.Do this with the die already screwed into the press first.Use a bar to pry the bolt down should pop right out.

I've done a variation of this method with success - tap the brass, insert a bolt and washer into the thread and pull it out by tightening the bolt. It only needs to be pulled about 0.100" to loosen.

my lee enfield mk4 has a sloppy headspace and tends to break a few case heads, I couldn't figure out how to get it out without a stuck case remover or cerrosafe. Sometimes just mortaring it would shake out the case, other times I just tapped an empty 9mm or 223 into the case and tapped it out with a cleaning rod, if its stubborn I had to put little bit of jb weld and then tap it out.

It turns out ,I just needed a bigger Hammer..lol
I used my 28 ounce framing hammer, gave it one quick, hard smack and it popped right out.View attachment 450104

Using a fine tap, tap the case, place a washer over the die, use a socket or pipe nipple as a spacer, then another washer, and thread a bolt into the threads, and draw the case out. Basically, an oversized stuck case remover.

Would the de capping rod/ expander from a larger caliber work? Like others have said it won't have to move much to be unstuck

Do the cleaning method that Ganderite said before you try the leg bolt, that way if it doesn't work you are all ready for the epoxy. Might be hard to clean it up after the leg both scars it up.

Except the lag screw won't scar anything up if you got slow and are careful .PS I have done this successfully on several occasions. In a BA the bolt is removed and a socket with extension is inserted .The lag screw is tightened just until you feel it bite into the brass .Put a small piece of wood that fits the receiver opening and almost the head of the lag screw leaving just enough gap for a pry tool.Pop goes the weasel.Don't matter the OP solved his own problem.

I keep 1" ling pieces of an old 20 gauge barrel, when this happens, every 2-3 years, i put the piece of barrel as a washer against the dies bottom, then a washer of the size of the metal bolt i'll use, depending on caliber. It pries out.. if my bolt is a little too slim, i just "shim" it with copper whool.
Works well.
Happy you trick worked!

First, this is not easy to do, in my experience.

Use a brush and brake cleaner to clean all the oil and residue from the inside of the stuck case. Then rough up the brass case insides.

Stick a disposable ear plug into the neck of the case.

Fill the case with epoxy.

Soak the die in real good penetrating oil for a day or 2. I use Kroil.

Install th die in the press. Pound the case out with steel bolt.

Make sure to let the epoxy harden, before soaking in Kroil or clean the inside of the case thoroughly after the soak and pouring the epoxy.

This is about the best way to do this job, without damaging anything.

I've done this on rifles with stuck cases, whose heads have separated, where a screw up could be very expensive. There are times when a dedicated stuck case remover will not grasp the lips of the case and more extreme methods need to be used. People don't appreciate mucked up chambers.

OP, that "stuff" you purchased for this project, all seems to be stuff you should have on hand anyway.

Never use force; get a bigger hammer.Laugh2
I guess I should clarify.
First I tryed one of those hammers with the black rubber on one side and yellow plastic on the other.
That was useless.

Also, I didnt really have to hit it that hard, with the steel hammer, just a quick tap and it popped right out.

No damage to anything.

Those work very well and I have several different units. The thing is, if the case has stretched a lot, which is often the problem in the first place, I've had these stuck case removal inserts fail t grasp the case mouth lip. Not enough room between the case mouth and chamber for the stuck case remover lips to spread into.

The next thing is to go through all your cases with a bent wire tool and sort out all with signs of incipient case head separation. I like to use a dental pick and drag it up the inside of the case. If the sharp tip grabs, its just another separation waiting to happen. Sadly, if you have one you probably have lots. If you have lots it usually means junking the whole batch.
