It WAS a No 4 MK I *T* sniper rifle than some moron, cause they wanted a lighter rifle for huntin' took all the scope mounting equipment off of and cut down!

Are they really worth $6k these days. I bought mine for $200

I think the 6K as quoted in the original post was a bit exagerated
and STR-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-TCHED!

Wheres the scope, scope covers, mounts, wood box, accessories, sling?

6K, dream on! :adult:

I got mine for $500.00. Did I done OK or could I have done Gooder!

That was before the US Economy went Kaboom!

In today's World, complete Brit Sniper $2000.00 to $3000.00

There has been alot of years since it's issue and now... 60 years ago when the 'damage' was done it had f-all for value.

Post pics when you have made it less ugly.

It made sense at the time. There were millions of these things floating around the surplus market and could be picked up at your local surplus store for $6 by some accounts. They made the perfect rifle for people who wanted a rifle for hunting at a cheap price. They then customized them to their needs.

You'll notice a similar trend with SKSs, albeit less frequently because gun ownership in general has declined.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the actions, just trying to provide some context for the period.

This is appalling, of course, but we have to look at the other side of the coin. If they ALL survived, they would be a lot less scarce and prices would be down somewhere that even I MIGHT be able to scratch it up. As they are, enough have been wrecked to push the prices upward.

Something we really have to watch is what our Government seems to be doing. Our local RCMP chop up every single thing they can find, court order or no. Recently, they sent a 1915 London Small Arms SMLE with a near-perfect bore to the welding-shop to be cut across with the oxy-acetylene torch. No court order, either. Enough to make you bloody well CRY. Small wonder they don't shoot at our local range.

At least this one has been saved from a similar fate and now has a CHANCE again.

Thank you, desporterizer, for a sobering lesson for all of us.

than some moron, cause they wanted a lighter rifle for huntin' took all the scope mounting equipment off of and cut down!

And then they carried it happily for 30 years slaying moose and bears, feeding the family teaching his kids and grandkids to shoot and generally being proud of his gun.

Remember if it was'nt for bubba these guns would not be worth what they are. If it also was'nt for bubba no one would have imported them in the first place!

I bet there are'nt too many on the milsurp forum that did'nt have thier first tinge of SMLE love kindled by a cut down sporter. I had lots of 22 SMLE trainer time and drill time with a full wood but it was the bastardized #4 and deer season that made the SMLE special.

Maybe just replace the word 'Moron' with "a man not forward thinking enough to ever imagine that someone would ever be moronic enough to spend 6K on a 150 dollar gun"
