How would you build your m14 for under $1000?

By a large margin.
To the OP. I would buy the stock rifle and invest the other funds in reloading gear and top components and do plenty of load development.

Most of these "upgrades" are useless. My personal opinion.

I don't agree with this statement at all.
How can a guy expect or claim (not saying anyone here is) to get consistancy down range from a semi auto that has not had the basics of upgrades/mods/tweeaks to tighten up the wiggly, loose parts that affect barrel harmonics?

Tune the rifle... Deal with the mechanical variables, then develop the load for shrinking groups.
I think that's the way it's been done with most firearms since the first gun was born LOL
But hey, to each his own ;)

Just pull your trigger group out, select a suitable movie or three, for out of season work F.M.J and Blackhawk Down yield excellent results. Grab a couple of brews, arrange seat for maximum comfort and ignore the wife for a few hours.
Basically what you do is cup the trigger group in your hand and dry fire the bugger about sixteen thousand times, with your thumb over the hammer so your not subjecting any parts to repeated shock. It is a really easy and effective way to smooth out your trigger. When you get to one of Barneys clinics you will see it done.
When you get 12 or 20 guys all doing it at once it sounds like the 101st Airborne sneaking around Normandy :)
You WILL trap your thumb, but the blood blister is the mark of a man.

Just kidding about the sixteen thousand............you'll feel the trigger smooth out as you progress and theres no nasty filing away metal and possibly screwing it up.
Have fun, but keep the band aid handy :)

Even better when using this method smear a bit of polishing compound on the sear ect. Goes a long way to speed up the process.

I did the following changes and happy with them:
1- Hungry clinic hosted by John at Marstar.
2- Garand rear sights
3- Heavy oprod spring guide
4- USGI fiberglass stock
5- Trigger job

Extras:
1- SA scope Mount
2- Redfield scope

Is that 1000 in upgrades or 1000 including cost of rifle?
NM spring guide rod
Non chinese muzzle device
Non chinese front sight
Non chinese rear sight
Good quality mags
a trigger job
Unitized gas system
And the rest on ammo ;)
One last thing...
Be ware of the snake oil sales man when it comes to accurac'zing or scoping this rifle.

I've given it some thought and if I could find good used (test fired) M305 for $500 here's what I'd do
USGI Walnut stock $150
Flash suppressor $100
NM guide rod $75
Sights $100
Bolt parts kit $100

I would bed the action to the stock, lap the trigger sear hooks and shim the gas cylinder.

Another $1000 would go to a GI bolt and a barrel.

Thomas has pretty much summed up my idea on these rifles and what I have done over last three years.;)

2009 M14S(449), National Match flash hider(50), NM spring guide(37), spring(10), shimmed(5?), Garand rear sight(80), Krylon olive drab fusion to cover that ugly black stock(8) Hungry hockey night in Canada trigger job(0),..priceless and it works.. Total 639 and done over three years so no one injured in the process. So I guess I could almost put 1000 762 from Can am in there as well, break that thing in over iron sights.

Remember, all the tiny upgrades I did were not necessary out of the box to enjoy this rifle,..just throwing a few things on as time passes to keep interest up.

For future,.. a Boyds or USGI walnut would be in my sights just because I like wood, or even a USGI fiberglass(painted olive drab of course it suits this rifle big time) stock would definitely be an upgrade from the plastic chinese one.:canadaFlag:

This is basically what im looking to do. Where can i find these parts in canada

• USGI fibreglas stock -bedded
• Unitized gas (Tony is awesome)
• Several of Thomas' clinics to index etc
• Sadlak QD post replacement
• USCG brake
• USGI rear sight
• NEA bolt release
• Trigger polish
• A.R.M.S. #18 mount
• NEA spring guide
• Elite 3200 Tactical (Japanese)

Bought the rifle and a few pieces used.

$1,100 all in. The scope put me over.

The "was" a bm59 rear sight in EE.
Excellent replacement
Or treelinem14 .com or try Spcamno here, he often has SAI M1A rears.

For those new to the rifle :
BM59, M1 garand, M1A and usgi M14 , rear sights, are compatable with your norinco. Gives a guy some options when questing for replacements

Thanks for the info. I'm still in the early stages of tweaking and doing load development for my rifle, so I'm not certain whether the stock rear sight is any good or not - the windage might be hinky. I think I might file down the front one to a thinner profile too, as its just far too large.

I would buy one of the new import full length ones from marstar, with a cheap sks thrown in for good measure. Then, a case of ammo from CanAm. What more do you really need?

I'd personally buy quality parts over the years and end up with a highend build rather than quickly acquire a cheap chinese copy. You'll have a rifle worth quite a lot without shelling a month of paychecks on it.

I would do things in this order: (well I have several times , anyways)

1) Op rod spring guide NM cylindrical configuration, S&J, NEA, M14Medic, tartanTactical, for the Norc Springs and Badger Ordnance, Smith, Sadlak if you wanna run an American Spring (USGI or M1A or Wolffe) - around $40

2) Replace the rear elevation and windage sights (I'm a dedicated iron sight shooter/competitor) $60 ish give or take

3) M1A gas system from Brownells or Treeline ($ 175 give or take)

4) USGI glass stock ($ 150 here on the EE Forum)

5) M1A gas system welding job by Tony/ M14Doctor/ Thomas/ 45ACPQueen ($ unknown because it's done at the clinic in BC)

6) M1A NM flash suppressor but still using the Norc castle nut ($80 from Brownells)

All the rest of the work, I do myself, and I will show you all these techniques at our (45ACPKing and I work together in the past) clinics. More fun to do the work yerself rather than pay a G'smith, then again you can send yer M14 boomstick to guys like Doug at Ellwood Epps or Casey at Tac Ord here in Bradford, ON or other G'smiths that you know in BC or AB or MB or NB or NFLD, or Accurate Action in Calgary (BossHogg)

Either way, the tweaking journey is half the fun. And I've practiced on hundreds of M1A's , M14's, and M305's, and also M1 Garands.

Cheers and keep helping out the Newbies around here!
