How Young

Wow, I was wondering the same thing! I have 2 daughters, ages 8 and 5, and both of them have been bugging me to come hunting for the longest time. According to you guys, I guess I'm way behind. I'll have to start bringing them out with me, on some small game hunts for now. My 5 year old was helping me skin a deer in the garage a couple week ago and had no problems with it, except for the sawing off of the head and legs.

My granddaughter more or less grew up in my moose processing shop. She went with me and handled the hounds on deer hunts since she was 5. She was really in to it and looking forward to carring her own gun. By age 6 she was shooting a Red Ryder BB gun at tin cans here in the yard and really wanted to shoot something bigger. At age 7 she and here mother moved over a hundred miles away so I only got to see her on the occasional weekend. Killed a nice 12 pointer in front of the dogs one Sunday and she seemend to really enjoy that. I called her the next day and asked if she had bragged to her friends at school about it. She said " Oh Paw Paw we aren't allowed to talk about hunting at school."
What the hell is the world coming too?
My earliest memory is riding on my dads shoulders as he climbed the mountain behind the house to get to a treed coon hound.

Swail, I define 2 types of kids these days, those that DO and those that DO NOT, my 3 boys have been in the bush since I can remember pushing a stroller down the trail to go fishing, now I look back on it and the worst crime they have ever commited was a fight or 2 in school (usualy over a girl) I look at my cousing 2 sons, same age never steped foot in the bush, have no knowledge of how to bait a fishhook or load a rifle (thank god for that) and they have been in and out of court and police cars since they were 13 years old, I dont totaly blame my cousin, I do blame peer preasure in schools and poor education system that alows teachers to preach anti gun and anti hunting to kids, I also blame there enviroment, if all they see is the streets and what they have to offer then what does 1 expect them to learn in life? GET them kids out and show them theres alot more fun in landing that 10 pound lake trout or baggin that 1st deer rather than walking the streets getting into trouble with the kids who will never get the same opportunities, WE as a whole need to push our kids to keep our lifstyles allive for future generations before we to become a page in history on how it used to be!

Maddog (Joe) had a sig line that said it best: little kids that hunt and fish dont grow up and mug little old ladies!

I beleive that 100%

I take my son and daughter hunting quite a few times this year, we're headed out this morning for a day trip.

My son is 5yr and my daughter is 3yr they both know the rules, dont take your ear protection off, allways stay behind or beside dad (never infront) keep talking to a minimum and when needed talk quietly.

we got two grouse last time we were out, they were both throughly thrilled by that :)

its a different type of hunting when you got the kids, your out there more for the kids then you are for the hunt. but its very rewarding and they love it. Its good for the kids to be walking out in the bush with a goal rather then walking aimlessly downtown without any goals. start em young so its easier later.

My sons are 7 and 6 been taking them shooting just about every weekend for the last year. They spent a week with me at our deer camp this fall and love every minute of it.
