HS stock fitting on 700 action .. twisted?!?

OK I picked up a used but good condition HS stock for my left hand 700 SPS Varmint. It is supposed to be a bolt on affair.... but not with my luck.

While initially setting the action into the stock it seems fine, but once I tried to slip the trigger guard on, I noticed something very strange to me.

The action is sitting a bit off kilter in the stock, preventing the trigger guard from being installed. I can see it plainly that the action needs to be twisted a few degrees to center the trigger in the opening. I assume the recoil lug that is between the barrel and action needs to move, but I don't dare move it until I know how it is attached and what it will affect if I move it. Any advice?

I am 100% sure the action isn't sitting straight, but I can't turn it because of the recoil lug. It fits perfect in the old tupperware stock, so I am thinking the tupperware stock has a twist in it from the molding process, and the action was fitted to it that way.

I think I may have found a solution.... apparently I can rotate the recoil lug by use of a brass hammer and a little finesse. Is this the right way to do this? Will it loosen my barrel at all?

I'd leave the triggerguard area alone. Install the triggerguard and place a couple long action pins in the mounting points; blacken the action and set it into the stock. See where it's hitting and relieve these areas. Don't think you will have to remove much material to get the barrelled action to seat in the stock. If excess material has to be removed you most likely will have to add bedding. These are never staight drop ins.

I'm no gunsmith, but could you not dremel the side of the recoil lug's channel in the stock? little by little,so that the whole barreled action can twist...that is if the recoil lug is the only thing stopping it.

edit: meaning from side to side, so that the recoil lug still does its job...

I don't think I should be relieving the stock... the action isn't sitting straight in the stock. From the top I can see the flange at the end of the action is lower than the stock on one side and higher than the stock on the other. It isn't much 1/16th inch or so, but if I rotate the recoil lug I believe it will correct all of the alignment issues. I just need advice as to whether or not this will change the barrel tightness or anything else I haven't thought of. Thanks

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!! Its not the gun but your Trigger mech. The new style safety is to big to fit the HS stock. Get a new trigger mech and you will be good.

OK, I see where the trigger, more specifically the safety is contacting the side of the stock. I really don't want to replace my trigger, I simply can't afford it. I am going to look into relieving the side of the stock where it contacts the safety mech. I don't wan to ruin the stock either though so I may talk to a local smithy before proceeding any further. Thanks for the advice.

I think someone on here had the same problem last week with is 700 not fitting his new stock because of the trigger/safety. I believe he fixed it with a dremal tool and had it fixed in short order. If you're not handy with a dremal tool (you will be pissed if you slip) I suggest a file.

ok 15 minutes with a roto tool and she fits like a glove... the area just behind the bolt handle needed to be enlarged a bit and it fit perfectly.

i had the same problem when i replaced my hogue stock with an hs one.

it took me about 20 minutes to gently remove the 1/8" or so needed and she's good to go.

it is irritating as heck at first when you expect it to just drop in, and it doesn't:)
