Huglu - Good or Bad?

Today I finally got around to shooting and patterning my new Huglu SxS with external hammers and 30 inch barrels … I shot a quite a bit of birdshot #6, slugs and some buckshot …

All went well … no hiccups … no bloopers … no misfires …!!! Yiippiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii … !!

Here my impressions:

- The gun handles nicely … I have no complains.
- The triggers are stiff …. very stiff … very very stiff! That is something I need to look into.
- The action is stiff as well. But I guess that is a good thing ….. it will loosen up over time.
- I did shoot slugs out of the right barrel … and that barrel seems to shoot low and to the left. Now I wish this gun had a folding rear sight … something else I need to look into.

(6 shots at 50 meters and no rear sight ... just the front bead)

I did shoot my Short Lane Arms 8 inch 22LR adapter out of the right barrel and I was pleasantly surprised. In my tests that adapter shot high and right … and the right barrel of the Huglu shoots left and low. What does that give us? Ahhhhh …. windage is spot on … elevation is a bit high. But I was able to hit a pop can consistently at 25 meters. And this without a rear sight … just a front bead. It seems that combination is working out really nicely …

Voila, … I think I have found my “One gun” that can do it all. Ok, it can maybe not do everything …. But for my Eastern Woodlands where shots are normally close … and within 100 meters ... this gun might be just the ticket .... from grouse and hare to deer and moose ... :d

My conclusions from today are two:

1.) I need a gunsmith to do a trigger job for me on this gun. The triggers are too heavy for “precision” shooting.
2.) I need a rear sight … ideally a folding rear sight that is out of the way for upland hunting … and that can be flipped up in a second for “precision” shots. I am hoping to find a gunsmith that can install such a sight.

That is it … I am very happy with my new acquisition.

;) :d

Nice looking shotgun and looks like you got a decent shooter. Too bad about the triggers but I am sure a smith can make it into a peach. It is always good to see a shooter happy with their purchase.

Ohhhhhh .... one more thing that I really liked:

She was easy to clean. The polished chrome lined barrels did not lead much. I was done cleaning in 10 minutes .... :d

Whereas with my 870s ... uffffff ... those barrels are not polished and slugs leave a heavy lead deposit ... they are a pain to clean and to get the lead out ...

I looked at the FAIR hammergun that Will had at the Easter gun show, wasn't at all impressed with the piece of wood that was on it. If that gun had a decent piece of wood on it, I very, very likely would have bought it. Not sure what to call it, it was like it had a million pinpricks in the wood, and they didn't even fill them. But, if I'd bought that, I'd have had to sell my CZ Ringneck, which I really like as well. When you can get a gun that looks that nice and shoots well, for under 900.00, you made a good deal.

I ended up picking up the FAIR this year at the winter gun show, he made me a deal I'd be silly to refuse. I went there with the intention of maybe getting some reloading supplies for up to about 100.00 worth, had no intention of buying a gun. Haven't taken it out yet, too busy with other stuff, glad I waited on it. I still like my CZ/Huglu 20ga Ringneck, been a good gun. It has around 500 rds of 3" steel thru it, no issues, been out in rain and snow and mud, just keeps on ticking. As I have a couple of wks off here at the end of this week, there will be a couple of days of shooting, the FAIR will get patterned, and a few rifles will get shot with various loads built over the winter.
