Hunter killed by bear, WRITE a letter to change Wilderness ATC 'rules'..

This is a very remote occurance and don't believe in carrying a handgun for protection. .

Im sure these fellows share your same view. NOT!!!!!!!! Just cause you carry doesn't mean you need to kill a charging bear. I've done plenty of bear hunting too.

I'm not against wilderness ATC but this case seems to be a wrong one to use as exemple, the guy was carrying a rifle and that didn't save him so I doubt a handgun would have. From the look of it, it seems to me like he was caught by surprise probably from behind.

Ted Nugent would be all over this. Some one should send him the link. In one of his interviews in Canada he specifically mentioned being charged by a grizzly and a side arm being quicker.

I'm gonna send it lol. Enough talk time for action.

Would you disagree that a handgun is easier to use in close quarters? Or when a bear has a hold of you? It might give you a fighting chance & I would want that chance!

Cheers

They dropped the .22 restriction here in favour of bear medicine. No law in Alberta that I'm aware of that prohibits you from carrying a firearm in archery season....just using it.

We still have quite a few asinine laws here, but what we don't have is grizzly (except the odd tundra grizz way up north), so the reluctance to issue an ATC is always based on that. Unfortunately most don't see black bear as a threat or reason to need an ATC. They're a bit more open to issuing carry permits near the Hudson Bay in polar bear country and the "shotgun only for guides" law doesn't apply there.

I'm all in favor, but in a lot of cases it gives a false sense of security. Just having a gun handy isn't going to save you. Most of these incidents come about when both parties are surprised at close range and the bear reacts instinctively.

Getting a running whitetail in crosshairs is hard....getting a charging grizzly in your scope close quarters...good luck. A pistol is designed for close quarters..fast action defensive shooting. Getting charged by a bear aint fun..thankfully I had a bluff but you never know and a 44 mag would sure be nice.

thanks jay for the inspiration to write a letter . a minor criticism would be that all people traveling in bear country should be afforded this protection as well as hunters.

Good luck... gun owners' life is not valuable nor protected by the antis. They be rather crucified you for protecting your own life from being mauled by the bear. Bears have more protections than we do.

I totally agree with you Jay, I'm just trying to counter the first thing all anti gun and anti hunting folks will say about this case. There's has been plenty of bear attacks from Quebec, Ontario and here out west lately where the victims didn't have a firearm for protection, why not use that as the basis of your letter?

This is a very remote occurance and don't believe in carrying a handgun for protection. There have been millions of days hunting in grizzly country by hunters, not including other recreationalists, where grizzly incidents is most uncommon. I've hunted and guided in grizzly country for decades, encountered them and never had a problem. If some are asking to carry, then you probably want a permit for the city that you reside or visit..............cities are more dangerous than grizzly country.

I agree its a remote experience. But given the choice if a guy wants to carry in his outdoor adventures he should have the option.

You don't want to - good for you.

As a guy that can empathize directly with this fellow - I have hunted that drainage, and I have packed for sheep hunting just like he did - with the rifle in the carrier on the pack. I would certainly carry a sidearm if permitted by law, and would have no issue with others wishing to do the same.

i agree with ATCs but Mr. Cross had a rifle so how would a pistol have helped?
none of us were there so we don't know what happened but ine this case would a pistol have helped?

Was the rifle loose, or carried in the carrier on his pack like 90% of the sheephunters I encounter (including myself)?

I carry pepper spray in a holster for the same reason - but if a sidearm were allowed I would certainly have one as well.

ATC is a very good point that Jay brings up. you wont convince the anti guns and anti hunters we need to focus on what we want and need.

What would the right example be?

Yup, and keep on dreaming; it's not going to happen. If you want to carry, become a BC guide in grizzly country or move to the USA. Canadian government won't allow because some idiot will think he's Dirty Harry.
