Hunter killed by bear, WRITE a letter to change Wilderness ATC 'rules'..

I am not sure how to address this, but the fact that folks on this thread have alluded to the fact that I am "grave dancing" is something I can not stand by without replying to.

Grave dancing would be CELEBRATING the man's death. I am doing NO SUCH THING!

I am advocating that he should have been afforded the right to defend himself with a sidearm IF he chose to carry one. It is the ONLY thing that might have saved him in a brutal attack where you don't have the space to use a long gun.

Unfortunately, our CFO's have decided that most of the land we hunt IS NOT wilderness & are refusing to issue Wilderness ATC permits. I agree with what others have said, if you can hunt there & if wildlife frequent it, then it is most certainly wilderness!

Imagine if Mr.Cross had applied for an ATC and been denied, IMHO the CFO's could potentially be found culpable in his death!

Prior to 1978, folks brought pistols & revolvers into the woods with them. Only recently has the antigun sentiment resulted in restrictions on LAW ABIDING citizens preventing them from doing so. Give your heads a shake! If you don't want to carry a sidearm, that's fine, but you should not restrict others in society from doing so.

No wonder the shooting sports are doomed. Even pro-gun members of this forum can't stand together. Sad.

Regards
Jay

I don't think some on this forum are necessarily anti-ATC or handgun, they just want to portray themselves as being superior "bushmen" and as such not needing an alternate method of defence, perhaps to awe those reading these threads that aren't quite as familiar with hunting and new to the outdoors. (where's that "worlds greatest man" picture)

Anyhow, politicians listen to voters. Keep sending letters and thanks for the original post Jay!

Western civilization is such a paranoid society. In this thread, immoral selfish impulsive action for extra gun rights is pursued. The victim of the bear mauling is not even buried, nor the investigation concluded by law enforcement officials, however lets carry handguns...........shame on you. I just shake my head with the mentality of some.
Really? rather than answer questions about your fear of people in the woods carrying handguns and other statements you are trying to take the moral high ground?

superior "bushmen"? that could mean a lot of things......... IMO It is sad when someone tries to claim any such title on an internet forum, real bushmen don't have the internet and are much more humble unless we are talking about something else?

I fail to see the downside of universally available wilderness ATCs. The highest calling any of our guns can be put to is the saving of human life. It boggles my mind that the availability of a devise, that is conceptually designed to protect, while being conceptually unsuitable for any offensive purpose, can or would be challenged. When that challenge comes from people whose use of guns plays such a rewarding part of their lives, my confusion and frustration grows exponentially. This idea that there is such a thing as good guns and bad guns, or that there are good cartridges and bad cartridges, is what's got us into the state of affairs we face today.

very well said boomer . i tend to get off track when dealing with people who can not see common sense but you have a way with words. it always amazes me that after an incident such as a bear mauling or worse the people that show up at the scene wearing uniforms are always carrying handguns . if it is good for the goose it is good for the gander .

Wow... very nice boomer.... thank you

Shame on you, track.
You can shake or spin your liberal head as fast as you want. But no one buy your garbage here. You can learn ruminating to chew your own distasteful junk.

This guy is leading you on and laughing up his sleeve.
The length of time some have been members of this board and still don't know when they're being trolled.
Even a fish will quit biting after it's been hooked a couple of times.
This thread is like a catch and release pond for trolls.

Couldn't of been said better by Piers Morgan himself; the master of standing on graves when he is losing an argument. Look in the mirror before trying to shame others.

Even his own liberal peers in the media got tired of Morgans pompous, condescending arrogance that turned many viewers off the show and shyt-canned his ass.
My wife called him "Mr. Superior".
Good riddance !

Thanks for getting things going Jay. Here is my letter going out in the morning...

Minister of Public Safety, Steven Blaney

House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6

Dear Minister:
I am writing you today as an outcome of the recent tragedy in Alberta where a hunter was killed by a grizzly attack while sheep hunting. His rifle and pack were found away from his body therefore he assumingly never had a chance to engage his firearm. As a hunter and avid outdoorsman who spends considerable time in the wilderness, I can’t help but wonder if the outcome would of changed if this man had a sidearm strapped to this belt.

Unfortunately, even though an ATC (Authorization to Carry) for wilderness protection exists, it is issued in very few cases and mostly only to people requiring protection as part of their employment. Whether one is working, hunting or hiking through the woods, they all equally have the right to self protection however CFO’s continue to interpret the law in a very biased way to ensure ATC’s are very limited.

I plead with you to take further action in your Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act to allow wilderness carry ATC’s for anyone holding a restricted PAL. In essence, anywhere one can carry a long gun in the wilderness, they should be allowed to carry a handgun for wilderness protection. Not only may this save lives, but eliminate the shameful prejudice demonstrated by the CFO's when issuing wilderness ATC’s.

I appreciate your support and urge you to take the necessary actions to implement these changes.
Sincerely,

Can we all use this or something close to it then mail it out?

Folks, please include the Swan Hill episode in your letter to the MPs. 2 years ago, a hunter( also a firefighter) was attacked from behind by a mom grizzly, he shot the grizzly with "illegally " carried handgun and was able to live to see another sunrise.

Please be reminded, this is probably our last chance to pass the common sense gun licencing. In a year, the Conservative might not be in a majority any more. We only have one year window to achieve it. Don't let the liberals among whom a guy nicknamed "track" is keep us off track.

Sent. Thanks for the push Jay. This indecent really bothered me and struck close to home when I read about it.. maybe we'll make an impression.
