Hunting 22's ... let's see'em ...

Wow you guys are hunting with some fancy rigs!

I had a 10/22 Target Tactical for some time, until I broke my scope from all the bouncing around on the quads at the cottage, and missed 2 grouse who just stood there looking at me like I was an idiot.

Since then I have opted for the simple, compact and lightweight solution for riding the trails up North.

Marlin 915 Youth Single Shot:

Doesn't get any simpler, and I never miss a grouse anymore. I also don't have to worry about smashing it off trees and bouncing it off the quad every now and then.

Where I hunt they don't even bother flying, and usually just sit there watching you, so it does just fine.

Heres my baby. I built her over the winter. She has more money and parts in her then most peoples AR's. I shot my limit of grouse with her the other day. I normally use a 410 shotgun for grouse but, I might never go back. Sure you miss one once and a while and shes a bit heavy but, I also get ones I never could before. With my bipod I can head shot a grouse at 150 meters on a calm day first shot. Havent had a run in with a CO yet. That should be interesting. lol

Quite the shot

O, I havent done it on a grouse yet but, have been practicing at the range. I can hit a 2" bull at 150 consistantly on a really calm day or about every 2nd-3rd shot on a breezy one. 100 meters is not even a challenge. Anything over 150 starts to get real tricky. I hit a pop can at 300 meters earlier this summer. That took more then one shot though lol. Still though, the spectators were amazed.

I have pretty good eyes but, I'm not sure I could see a bird 150m away...

Yeah, they'd have to be on the road for sure or you'd never see them that far. I hope to get one at at least a hundred meters one day. The hard part is seeing them while your still that far out. I have often comtemplated slowly walking back down the road just to get to shoot farther lol. Its really fun using a 22 though. It has brough new life back to bird hunting for sure. Its good practice too.

How much drop were you looking at for the 300m shot?

A ridiculous amount of drop. Three quarters of the way down the bottom post on a Leupold VXII. So maybe like 6 or more feet. Hard to say for sure. Luckily, it was a dry day so me and my spotter could see where the misses were hitting and compensate. The wind at that distance is far more of a problem then the elevation though. Even the smallest breeze sends that little bullet way off when shooting that far. I think it would be near impossible if it were gusty.

On my 22LR rig and the scope I am using 200 meters is the absolute farthest I can shoot. At that range I use the last mil-dot and use some Kentucky windage to aim at what I am tring to hit. But then again it's a 13" barrel.
LoL!!!
Plus I have enough ammo to get any grouse or small game for that matter scared.

Plus a big knife so I can snack on them after I clean them up.

What scope is that Satain?
If I win the lottery tonight, I'm going to buy you a better camera :p

Really wish I could use a .22 for grouse here, it's shotguns only.

I love 22 rimfires, and have a few that make great hunters.
Some are used strictly within 100 yards or so, but a couple are set up so a 200yard shot is feasible.
Optics are being slowly upgraded as funds permit.
Here are the first couple. The top rifle is a BRNO ZKW 465 in 22 K-Hornet, and has been traded away.
The second is a Winchester 69A. Very accurate and handy
the third is a Mossberg 151M(b) Semi-Auto. Flawless function, and very accurate as semis go.

Next group, again, the first rifle has sold, a Remington 504 Sporter with a Shilen barrel.
The second is a Mossberg 42M(b) beautiful wood, very accurate.
The third is a Mossberg 146b, not pretty, but even better on a target than the 42M.

Third group: Top is a Remington 541T Sporter. This is a long range setup.
Second is a Remington 541S, another long range setup.
Third is a CZ 452 American, one of the best buys for the dollar out there, IMHO.

Missing a couple of others, such as a CZ M99, a Winchester 52C Sporter, and a Remington 581 cut down for a smaller shooter.
Also missing, a CZ 452 American 17HMR and a Marlin 25MN 22WMR.
Did I mention that I love rimfires? :D LOL.
Regards, Eagleye.

LOL!!!
Every time I think I have enough money for a camera I end up see a new firearm that I just have to buy.
;)
As for the scope I figured since the rifle is made in China why not the scope 2? So I got a Vector 2-6 illuminated mil-dot and it came with free dovetail or weaver scope rings that you have to ask for. The guy is off Ebay and goes buy the name of SC_Scope. Actually for the price it's preaty darn good but then again I wouldn't place this optic on anything more than a 22.
Also this little rig won me a steak dinner @ the Keg from a buddy of mine who had the same set-up except he went out and spent big $$$ on a Nikon 1-4 and we were shooting at shotgun husks standing @ 25 meter's. Everyone at the range was surprised cuase I ussaly just make noise & when they seen that I could actually hit some thing they just b:
Thats sad to hear that u have to take a shotgun to a tiny little grouse. Even with a 410 I wouldn't realy want to eat it cause of all the little shot pelets if there was any meat left over any ways. Just another example how government is the problem.
