I would prefer to hunt by myself, but the wife doesn't like it - she worries. It is nice to have someone else around to help with the drag and if you are in a new area, you can cover more ground. That said, I usually take off on my own once we get to a hunting spot.:D

Ihave mostly hunted by myself my rules are to strict for most . but last year a buddy I ride motorcycles with started hunting together . He hunts like I do and has very similar ethics so it works.

I should qualify this by saying that I'm primarily talking about hunting birds:

I prefer hunting with a partner that works like I do. We often flush birds toward one another.

I'll hunt alone before I'll let a possible hunting day get wasted, but I have a third choice, now - goin' with the dog!

I go to hunt moose and deer in Northern Ontario... always alone.
Not that I wouldn't appreciate the company of some good friends , but I prefer to hunt with people that I'm already friends with.... seen way too many trips ruined by some jerk trying to show off.

Is there an element of danger ? Sure! That's what we live for!!!
To sweeten things up, you have more chances to die shot by anpther hunter than avtually be killed by elements. (statistics)

The only think tha limits your moves is that you hae to think ahead about taking the game out from wherever you're shooting it. No friends to help you there, but if things become impossible, I find it hard to believe that you can't find some locals ready to give you a hand.

Try it, is all I can say.

I love doing both. I have gone alone since I was six with my Daisy Red Ryder,
call that being a different case but I wouldn't. How many would send their six year old loose on a half section of land free togo where I please.

When I started on big game, I went with a friend (mentor) most the time, but I was also sitting alone on a cutline after school more often than not. I was always close enough to get help if it was needed.

Nowadays, I really like the enjoy a hunt with someone else, but I am careful who I go with. No sissies allowed ie: "My feet hurt, I don't wanna go over the next hill......" In a catch 22 way it is hard to find many who don't mind walking so I still go and enjoy a break from insanity. It is important to know one's limitations, once that is established you should be good to go.

I've hunted alone for days, and trapped alone for months when I was younger.
Still hunt alone , and my brother still traps alone sometimes, but no longer lives on a fly in line.

People have told us it's dangerous.
HELL, have you ever tried to cross a street in Ft. Mac.,
or drive that highway ??!!
Now THAT'S dangerous!!

I normally hunt alone but the ranch owner's would suspect something amiss if I wasn't back for breakfast. It is not easy to find someone you are compatable with. One smoke and drank way past my bedtime, and I went early without him. When I came back to camp, he would get up and go when I went on my second hunt. Had a cousin who's idea of hunting was to take a case of whiskey each . . . the hunt was over when the whiskey was gone . . . never went with him and never missed nothing. To find a hunting partner willing to go to bed when you do and roll out at the same time is a tall order . . . have no idea where I might find her!

Hello all,

I was wondering what your opinion on hunting alone is, personally I think it would be neat, get out enjoy the outdoors without distractions, completly on your own so you can think, I've always liked the outdoors and spending time away from it all by myself but never for more then most of the day while having a camp with family nearby and never really far from help (larger Provencial Parks etc), but I can read a map and compass and I can navigate pretty good in the wilderness away from the trails etc. I can cover quite abit of land when needed, last summer was avaraging 7km's a hour in the bush while hiking (or would this be more like running hiking ?? ) on uneven terrain etc with a 20lb pack :)

The only downfall is if you shoot a animal just got to pack it ALL out yourself (still would give good exercise I guess :p) but other then that seems like a fun idea. :)

By the way before you talk about a emergacy etc if I was gonna do it I'd be carrying one of thouse fancy PLB for a EXTREME emergacy only. Basiclly I'd be dead within a couple hours before I'd decide to click it. :p

So please tell us...How did you expect this poll to go?

Pretty much the way it happend, I knew hunting alone was quite common, its a few hunters I know personally who think its nuts to go hunting alone or go into the bush alone. And they have been trying to argue with me that its really unsafe to get me to change my mind about it. Hense why I decided to post this poll. :p

I PREFER to hunt alone.

Sometimes I have to avoid some of the guys so I can get out by myself!

A good portion of my hunting is done alone, and I like to take at least one weekend trip per year by myself.

I'm proabably split 50/50. I'll go out with the guys but if no one is avaliable I'm not staying home...The family always knows where I'm off to.

I've been doing it for years. Always pack a compass, map, GPS, batteries and a Cel phone. I'm not exactly in the middle of nowhere but it is my prefered method of hunting.

Glad you mentioned that, I like to take a topo , draw a buffer 1 mile from all roads, then search beyond that for pockets that may hold game. Most folks do not wander much more afield than that , game know this also:D The big ones anyway:shotgun:
