1811 close to the Whirlpool River near what is now Jasper famed explorer and surveyor David Thompson and his party of six came across tracks in six inches snow no one in thier party could identify.
Some said it was tracks of baby wholly mammoth but others said it was from a very large grizzly.
But they did agree tracks were six hours old moving north to south. No one desired to track it down.
This is a well reported story from the pages of his own journal. There were very experienced local hunters in his party.
