Hunting capable Semi auto. I'd like solid advice.

Nope. I know what a Win Model 100 is. Nice rifle alright ! Usually some on the EE too.

I just like bolt guns.

Don't throw your brass all over the place. Easy to load/unload.
"generally" fairly accurate, easy to sight in by looking down the barrel, easy to clean
Can be operated damn near as fast as anything else once you practice with it...
No jamming issues, etc.

But please, get whatever you want.

BAR is suited well for hunting.
Mini 30 it fine for deer, light handy and reliable!
Kick it up a notch, Sauer 303, Merkel SR1.

Is everyone on this thread too young to know what a Win Model 100 rifle (carbine even better) in .308 is? Too bad...

I had a Model 100 once. Bought it at a gun auction in Wainwright Ab and got it home and turned out the one arm of the action was broken. Took it to WGP in Edmonton and he said it was a constant problem so he never had parts. Old Rod at Westgate TIG welded it for me and after I put it back together I traded it back to him on a Savage 110 and was happy.

another + for the Bar 308. Had one, sold it, sure wish I hadn't!
Have one at the moment in 30-06 that is for sale with a new Boyds stock.
I had a Rem 7400 years ago. It was a good rifle.
Collected Win 100's for quite a while. Never hunted with them.
Have two Rem 742's at the moment. 6mm and 308. They both shoot fine.

In a hunting rifle, as compared to a range/target toy....your choices are the Remington semi(740/7400) and the Browning Bar. I have heard that the remingtons are both jammers and not accurate............

And one last thing: do a little more research before you throw out the "remi semi".

Yes, the 740 and 7400 were known as Jamamatics, but they haven't been produced for some time............

The 30-06 is the most available round in the world, you can go anywhere and will find it on the shelf for less (only the 30-30 is cheaper, but, availablity is limited to NA). The available choices for ammo allow for small to big game. A remington 750 in 30-06 is a good choice for what you are looking for with the Browning BAR a little higher up in quality, cost and weight. Stay away from the Remington 740/742 as they did have issues.

Been away and out of Internet Land for the past week, and came home to find this thread.

I hunt only with bolt action rifles, but did a little test with a Jammomatic three winters ago: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/834855-The-Remington-742-in-extreme-cold-Jam-O-Matic?highlight=Remington+742

If you are set on a semi for hunting, my advice would be to just find a good used 742 in 308 or 30-06, sight it in, and go hunting! They are light, handy, and you will be pleasantly surprised with the accuracy, and very pleased with how little recoil they produce.

If you shoot one enough to wear it out, you can just buy another. Actually, you can buy three or four of them, and still be money ahead of the European products. :)

I'd hold off until after the federal election before investing big dollars in a BAR or suchlike.
If a worst case scenario happens and "the beard" becomes PM he might make a grab for the handguns and semis.
If a NDP government delegates the authority to ban guns to a province gun owners in Alberta, Quebec and Ontario with socialist governments might be feeling the ban bite.
Like it or not it's a possibility and there's no sense sticking your head in the sand and pretending otherwise.
Soon as a semi ban happens it's either turn them in for no compensation, export them or deactivate them.
Sure they aren't registered and you can hide them but what's the point if you can't take them out and hunt with them?

I have a pretty decent Winchester 100 in 308 Win for sale.
Nothing wrong with the gun but I'm cutting back the arsenal and getting rid of the dust collectors.
Might be shedding a flutted barrel black synthetic BAR in 300 Win Mag as well.
Both the Winchester model 100 and the BAR are good guns with the BAR leading the pack in accuracy.

just how soon "could" this actual ban take place? I have a number of s/a that I would like to sell off before this possible ban may happen. I'm not even using them, so why sit on them. I have a gun show coming up in Dec, but could that be too late by then?

There are some "hunting" designed semi auto's, like the Win 100, Rem 740/742/750 series, and the BAR.

The BAR has the best (and well deserved) reputation of these rifles, but it also cost twice as much, so no surprise there.

You can also hunt with a military semi. I've shot moose with a Garand, and I'm not the only one.

When you gain more real life experience with firearms and different uses they have, as well as the vast array of different chamberings and ammunition out there, you may want to hunt with more traditional hunting rifles. Or not.

Pretty soon after the change in governmet and then they give you a period of time to lawfully dispose of them.
It doesn't take long for the government to make an OIC.
Right now the SAs are worth cash.
After the ban they're scrap iron.
Who's going to buy them even if grandfathering is offered?
A grandfathered prohib is a safe queen.
You can't take them hunting or to a range and when you die the government grabs them.
I got rid of a bunch of handguns and 12X prohibs a couple of years ago.
Even handguns are useless unless you like poking little holes in paper.
After I quit competing because of my eyes paper poking got tired fast.

I'm not saying it's going to happen but with a NDP government and the RCMP pushing them hard to ban anything and everything only a fool would say it's not possible.
A lot of guns have been prohibited in Canada to date even with a CPC government in place.

It's a real shame that the AR15 is restricted. I've got 2 with 14.5 " barrels and they are light and handy and accurate. I'd love to hunt yotes with one. I'd love to hunt deer with one if it was chambered in .308 or something.
