Hunting Grizzly with the 45-70

Thanks for the useful links. I always did like the idea of heavy cast in the Marlin. A new 1895 is at the top of my list for what to buy next.

I read about an old Inuit who preferred the 22 magnum for polar bears. Would shoot it in the lungs broadside. The bear would barely react to the hit and just continue along, then the lungs would collapse and the bear will keel over. Just takes time.

But the testicle biting dog story is way better. :)

Reminds of the story a local old timer told me about his moose hunting preference. He would use a 22 magnum to spine the moose. This wouldn't kill them, but he would then walk up, grab the antlers, twist and break his neck.
Those old timers sure had balls. I bet he walked to school for 10 miles, uphill both ways. And remember winters were much colder back then. :)

That's easy for us folks that have hunted & target shot with with it for many years and just plain love the chambering. They be many good reasons the 45-70 has been with us for 144 yrs. Its' a sweetheart of a round to work with when one gets "magnumitis" out of their beans. It'll keep on doing the job for many years yet on the big & small stuff.
:)

In my experience, "magnumitus" is a term typically used by people with low recoil tolerances..... The word "magnum" is a word used by rifle and cartridge makers to sell people the latest and greatest rifle they now "need"..... at the end of the day, a cartridge is a cartridge..... you either shoot it proficiently or you don't...... bravado seems to come from some in the form of their ability to shoot heavy kickers and, from the other end from those that can't and tout using the smallest energy cartridge they can as "manly"....

The fact is, we are talking about a potential 1000 pound animal that has a tendency to get angry once in a while and cause a lot of damage..... my personal choice for bears (and no have never shot a grizz, but many blacks), is a round that causes shock..... a slow moving "eat right up to the hole" round would be my last choice..... bears have extremely low heart rates and are slow to bleed out.... a good fast moving round that creates a good amount of shock and large wound channel would be my preference...

I have shot Several bears with my 95g 45-70 both with 420 and 525 gr Hard cast bullets - it will shoot end to end of any Bear and KILL him dead FAST ! There are NO Bears able to take on the Mighty 45-70 with good bullets and a well placed shot ! I LIKE to shoulder shoot them amd then place a finisher shot if nessacary ! ;) jmo RJ

I have four 45-70's...

Load from 250gr - 550gr...

I know the round and I know what it can do...

Those that are spewing against it have probably no experience with it...

If you have experience you know what it can do and wouldn't hesitate to use it on grizzly...

Just saying...

I worked remote wilderness areas in BC for 7 years every year I applied for a grizzly tag I got a grizzly tag...

That's just crazy talk.:runaway:
