Just wondering if any of the members here are from the prairie provinces and if your see/hunt pigs out there.

I'm reading theres a lot in the media just wondering about first hand accounts of people who actually live there.

Is there a large population and are the increasing?

Thanks for any feedback.

Yes
Loads around
Hard to find them at first
Once you do find them bingo!!

Dont matter how many the official trapper/hunt teams kill
The numbers are still there

Shoot the big uns and leave them
Only eat the pigs 100lb or less
Otherwise they are rank

We had a problem in the south west here about 15 tears ago but we were all hungry and very vigilant and got them all. I ate quite a few as did others and the biggest one was about 200 lbs and tasted great. I think it all depends on time of year and whether they're breeding at the time or not. It was fun.

I shot one this past deer season in sk. First one I’ve seen with gun in hand. There’s definitely fewer here than a decade or 2 ago when there were game farms around. Think there will always be a remanent population, they’re tough. Imo you’d need local help to find a decent hunting opportunity anywhere.

I'd love to run across one while out hunting, would save cash buying pork to make sausage.

Yeah...... Apparently the province is overrun with the damn things.... but no one will give any info on their whereabouts. :d

I have yet to see one in my travels, which leads me to believe that we aren't really overrun.

I've never seen any, my friends never seen any, their friends never seen any..

The only one I have encountered was roadkill.

I always hear stories but nobody ever reveals the pigs location or knows where to go.

The government plan is to keep info on thier whereabouts on the down low . For fear that hunting activities will scatter the known groups and create a larger harder to control population . Much easier to track a large ( trap/cull )groups . Just viewed a video this morning about how they are tracking and trying to track them . Once them hogs get wise to the traps they tend to steer clear so the control agents have to keep changing there game techniques . Large fence traps to get the most in one shot than single beast traps . I have only heard of the odd stories of them getting lose from small farms . The story this morning was in part about a group that has been romeing around free for the last couple years not far from me . It was a french video/report they also mentioned that so far they have been successful in the control and traping efforts .

Friend of mine shot a couple out by Nojack, but I've never seen one when I was hunting. Wish I could. - dan

Attended a work shop that dealt with the subject, yesterday. :) The ones in Alberta are mostly in the north central part of the province and in two counties, Lac St. Annes and Woodlands. The recommendation is to discourage sport hunting since it serves to disperse sounders. The preferred method is trapping the entire group. Of course, being government, they are just conducting studies now. I pointed out we had some near Sundre and they were eliminated by sport hunters. The government rep showed this video, from Texas to demonstrate how bad it can be.

Ya I have seen a couple around Nojack and Anselmo Hall area. Frind of mine shot one by Anselmo. They are around for sure. Also seen one running across the field at the whitcourt airport one day I was at work there .

When we were younger we went on the odd pig hunt , different pigs ..
Funny you say that. Had a friend in Vernon back in the day, the house usually shared by 2 or more guys and downstairs had an outside access door
to a community-use suite
the Pig Door only had traffic in the dark of night
what happened downstairs, stayed downstairs

I saw a small group trotting along the bottom of Devil's Coullee, south of Raymond, AB, in the fall of 1994. The only hogs I have ever seen. My father and a buddy ran into a group of around 20 animals somewhere north of Valleyview, AB, back in 1995. I spend a fair bit of time out in the bush and have never come across them since, not even tracks. I have another buddy that seems to find them every couple years. He has taken a few, mostly around Barrhead, AB. He took one east of Beaumont, AB, a couple seasons back.
