So with my latest birthday come and gone, the wife has ordered me to pick out a new hunting jacket for myself. Her exact words "...spare no expense." Man I love that woman. :)

So who's wearing what, and how do you like it? I'm looking for a jacket that can multifunction for deer archery, muzzle, rifle, and early season moose. So that means late August to December - in Manitoba.

I need some ideas fellas.

Well, I picked one up at Bass Pro before deer season. It's a 4 in 1 parka. (Has 2 jackets that zip into each other.) It's got all the pockets you would ever need, shotshell holsters in the outer jacket pockets as well as on the inner jacket vest. Has a detachable hood, and detachable game sack on the back. It's Realtree Advantage Max4 HD pattern. Alot of browns, yellows. AWSOME in hardwoods, and great for the marsh for duck hunting.
It's very warm, no complaints there.
Manufactured by "RedHead" which is Bass Pro's own line. I wasn't planning on buying one, but I happened to walk by a rack of them on for half off!! Regular $199, on for $99 bucks!! I almost soiled myself. Good deal.

Ultimately, I'm very happy with it. The only other thing is it could be more of a quiet material. (That fuzzy cottony stuff..)
It doesn't say "waterproof" I don't think....but the rain beads off it very nicely and seems to keep very dry.
Zippers are heavy duty, and it has adjustable neoprene cuffs.

It has storage for EVERYTHING!! I'm still finding pockets for crying out loud!!

What's wrong with just a new stanfield sweater ?

December in Manitoba can be a little nipply. The only Stanfield's I wear have a trap door on the backside.

44Fordy has the right idea. A layered system is what I'm looking for.

I bought a Browning Gore-tex about 3 or 4 years ago now. It wasn't cheap, but they have come down in price. I can't say that I like the latest camo choices though; my jacket is much lighter in tone overall than the new ones. The jacket is designed for a zip-in fleece vest or jacket. I wear mine on mornings during early elk season without the zip-in, and on any day it rains. When the temp. drops below freezing I zip in the fleece, usually only wearing a flannel button up shirt under it. As long as I don't sit to long it is warm enough for me to about -15 celsius before I need to add a sweater. The jacket has really held up, and shows no wear. It is plenty quit for rifle hunting, but makes just enough noise for an elk to hear me move at 3 yards. Mind you, the elk (6 of them) I had at 10 to 25 yards last year didn't hear a thing. :)

I use a plain ol wool jacket, quiet walking through the bush, keeps ya warm. I never wear camo for hunting deer, moose, and my moose LEH I moved slowly up to her and we were both in a slash. I got to withing 75 yrds before I dumped her.

Oilskin jacket lined. 3/4 length. I wear wool underneath. You can sit and the jacket is long enough to cover yer arse, no wind gets thru, collar sits up high and its quiet in the bush. $200 (and you can wear it to church too, instead of wearing your camo jacket everywhere and lookin' like a loon....)....

:slap: I like looking like a "loon". Whats wrong with wearing camo???????

God will accept anyone and doesn't care what your wearing!
Yes even you black gun lovers!!!!!

I wear a Codet wool timber crusier jacket. (Filson or Woolrich are good too but not Canadian) Under that I wear my flannel shirt, Helly Hansen "T" (wicking) and on really cold days Canadian army issue cold weather sweater. The cruiser coat has an extra cape layer that sheds water really well. Only draw back is 2 pockets. It is super quiet. I put a blaze vest over the whole thing to be big game legal.

cheers Darryl

Some of the best deals I have found on hunting jackets are in www.sportmansguide.com under "military surplus", a lots of these well made military jackets are never issued and brand new, and can often be bought for under twenty buck. I specially like the german stuff in "fleck camo". Also look for military harnes that are easily converted for hunting use.

I used to wear wool until I got caught in a rainstorm in moose season. A wet wool jacket weighs 40 pounds. Don't know about Man. but In ON you need Hunter Orange in big game gun season, so maybe reversable and waterproof with a soft texture for quiet. I have an orange waterproof hunting suit.

No doubt the Filson stuff looks appealing, but how warm is it? Low fold down collars? No hoods?

Some of their Shelter Cloth products look tempting, but IMHO, it looks like Filson needs to focus a little less on style, and a little more on functionality.

Now, that RedHead product that Asphalt mentioned looks like it might do the trick.

I bought a Redhead jacket this year and absolutely love it. Waterproof, warm comfortable, lots of pockets. Would definately recomend it.

This looks very similar to the one I have. Mine is in the Advantage Max4HD.
Forgot to mention, that it is nice and light too.....basically it'll serve all your applications.
Very pleased....great price for a great product.

How warm is Filson stuff, well I can only speak for there wool. I have there timber mackinaw wool hunting coat with hood, aswell as there mackinaw bibs and pants. I wear this moose hunting in october(northern ontario) and late season deer hunting in november, were I site for hours on end sometimes in all kinds of weather. Very rarley do I get cold. The only bad thing I can say is that wool doesn't stop strong wind very well, but I solved that problem buy wearing a BPS windstopper sweater under my coat. I personaly don't think you can go wrong with any Filson product, they have been around a very long time and make tough and reliable products.
