I have a friend who wants to head up north of edmonton to do some whitetail hunting. He was looking for ideas on different locations to hunt. He wants to go for whitetail but would also like to get a wolf. Does anyone have any general areas that would work for him? He was thinking Grand Prairie or slave lake area would be good but hes not nailed down to anything. Any advise would be appreciated.

GP and SL are good choices for what you wish to hunt. Take my advise and stay off the muskeg if you can.

White tails are everywhere in Alberta. Aside from tags, I don't carry enough ammo to shoot at the deer I've seen daily in the last week. If you want big wolves, hit the eastern slopes. We dropped a couple big dogs there a few weeks ago. One weighed in at 190 pounds.

From Edmonton, it's a real pretty drive up towards Slave Lake via Swan Hills. There's literally about 200km where you could just park on the side of the road and head into the bush at almost any point. Quite a few forestry roads right off the highway also.

I can't vouch that you'd find wolves (though I think it likely) but you'd sure be almost guaranteed to see lots of deer and other wildlife. Amazing how little civilization there is between Fort Assiniboine and Slave Lake. I don't have a clue how much of it is crown/open land though.

There is a great road that goes between Timeau (northeast of Fort Assinaboine) and Slave Lake. Everyone calls it the powerline road because you basically follow this powerline the whole way up. There is not alot of frost out there right now, so I am not sure If you can make it all the way through with a 3/4 ton 4x4. If you have quads, your laughing, however you can just park at the first ugly spot in the road and you are already in prime monster buck country. In the last ten years there have been some beautiful non typical whitetails taken scoring over 200". There is a great gene pool up there, and you have a good chance at scoring a muley as well. If you want wolves then Grande Prairie, Manning and Peace River have a real wolf problem right now. They go in cycles with the elk and caribou.

That's some pretty country. Sister used to live NE of there. Son and I hunted there one year. I looked at all the land on google earth, picked out the terrain we were looking for, used the gov't site to track down contact info, and there's a dandy WT on the wall beside me. Yup, google earth, the Ab gov't crown land contact info site, county maps and a little effort..... ;)

In fact today I was going to talk to son about doing the m/l season on the base next fall.

Good luck Steven, have fun.

The problem with wolves even though they are everywhere, is that its very random to come up on them, and even less to get a shot off. More time in = more sighting, but wolves can hunt a 100 mile circuit. I've seen a dozen so far this year, but I've spent over 45 days so far deep in the bush this fall. Eight of the dozen were in one pack.

I'm heading to GP Wed morning for elk, moose and WT deer if I see a large enough buck.Passed up lots already.Shot a black wolf and a cow moose last year with my 9.3x62...........Harold
