About 9 years ago, my boss, a fellow worker, and I were putting along a small country road gabbing and sort of looking for deer. Lo and behold we spot one just a ways in off the road. I bail out and walk in after the deer. A short distance in, the deer stops for a look. I shot the deer. My boss comes in to give me a hand and the fellow worker waits at the road. Along comes a farmer who owns the land, and pours it to the guy for hunting on posted land. Hmmm. We drove back and, sure enough, there was a NO HUNTING sign on a tree. Oops! I did some snooping and found out who the owner was. I phoned him and said I wanted to come out and apologize in person. I drove out to his farm. It turns out that one of his sons was the one who found us. The man said it was okay to hunt there, but he kept it posted to try to minimize the damage done by a$$holes driving through his crops. We had a good visit and I left. A few days later, I stopped in at the Dad's to wish him a Merry Christmas. He shook hands and said, "Wait a minute". He came back with a nice big frozen chicken and a big smoked pork roast and gave them to me!!! Well, that one turned out okay!! I believe the key was to have gone out and faced the man and made a sincere apology.

Sounds like good old western hospitality to me.

My first year hunting in Manitoba, We were going to the next push.

Suddenly we stop.

Theres a couple trucks parked, and a guy leveling a rifle on a fence post just past the ditch off the road.

He shoots the deer clean dead at about 300 yds.

So I ask where are we, and whose land is this.

My friend says "It's my land".

So aren't you going to giv'em hell? I ask.

He says no. He's hunting legal and recognizes the truck and owner of truck, so we all just wave and move on.:D

Just love the rules out west. If you're recognized you're perdy much good to go...

So shoot first and ask questions later kinda thing.

If the land is poste dno hunting then the hunter cannot even hunt it.
I am sorry to say you got away lucky. There are so many land owners that have stoped hunting. I hope you still visit the farmer as land in Ontario is becoming hard to find. IMHO all the cityiots are moving to the country

Not sure about the no hunting signs anywhere else, but in AB, a land owner can post no hunting signs on his land, and still hunt there himself. As a matter of fact, he can still allow whomever he wants to hunt regardless of what signs he posts. Usually the signs are posted to keep unwanted people from accessing private land........

100% correct if the land is posted NO HUNTING even the owner of the land cant hunt it.......we ran into this years and years ago after catching trespassers my dad post all his land every few hundred meters on all roads that the land bordered on. That hunting season a CO stopped in and asked my dad why he's hunting on posted land yada yada the next day all the no hunting signs were changed to no trespassing.

As for the cityiots I cant agree more as prices raise in major city centers they move out into the country to get more house for their money. You cant blame them but they also shouldn't move to the country then expect every one around them to stop doing country things like shooting and hunting......around our farm there are a few cityiots that call the cops every time they hear a gun shot. A couple years a go the first week of white tail these cityiots called the cops 52 times in 6days to complain of excessive gun shots.......cops said its deer hunting season what do you expect?....good thing most of the cops around the area hunt to so they never give us any hassles...but we have herd people yelling at us in the distance to stop shooting to which we just shoot more :kickInTheNuts: .....if you don't like rural activities don't move to the country stay in your 10th floor condo and leave me alone.....

Not exactly...... I posted this to relate my experience, and to show that a little humility was in order. As I stated in the first post, we were gabbing and missed the sign, which was high up in the tree. We were wrong, no doubt about that. I still think it was reasonable mistake, and it was a fair thing to talk to the owner in person. I realize I'm probably the only hunter to ever make such a mistake - at least of any hunters who post here......

Posting your land no hunting DOES NOT mean the owner cannot hunt on it. Maybe years ago it did, but not anymore, here in Ontario.

The same is true in SK!

And most other places as well. The myth that even the owner can't hunt on land posted"no hunting" is usually started by jealous people that weren't granted permission to hunt,or that never bothered to ask for permission.

No hunting signs in BC mean no hunting for the owner as well.

Does that apply to "No Parking" signs as well???

That is weetodded, as a land owner I am able to post any rules I like, does not mean I have to abide by the same rules....at least in Ontario.

Good of you to go back and apologize kjohn.

I have noticed lately farmers in Eastern Ontario are far open to hunters than they were 10 years ago.
Maybe due to the rise of Coyote numbers, not really sure but I like it.

I hunt in Ontario and last week was introduced to a Township bylaw that requires anyone in possession of a gun or discaharging a gun on private property to have written permission from the landowner even when the landowner is hunting with you on his land. The cop even stated the son needs written permission from the landowner? If you do not believe me PM me and I will give you the Township so you can download the Bylaw?

Post the legislation.
As Waterfowler has pointed out, this used to be the case, it is no longer.
The township in onterible, well, that's one townships ignorant little bylaw.
