Hunting Rifle - .30-06 vs .308 WIN

Anyhow my 308's are intended specifically as Deer rifles so lighter bullets will do. As previously mentioned I like the 308 because inexpensive milsurp ammo is widely available. I've replaced the 145gr FMJ bullets on Norinco rounds with Hornady 130gr SP bullets and used the same powder charge. These rounds chronograph at 2850 fps from my 308 Zastava LKM70 rifle without issues and are reasonably accurate. Groups shown are at 100 meters off the benchrest.

Only reason for the 308 is a short action if you hafta have it but the 30 06 loads and feeds flatter and better significantly so in a 700 anyway, and outperforms the 308. My vote 30 06

.308 go whit a short 20/22 inch barell whit a good 3-9 or 2.5-10 scope and you have whit 165/168gn a very good all NA riffle whit low recoil and lightweight fun

Can't speak for the savage, but I have a T/C venture in 30-06... it's the best shooting rifle I own. That's kind of disappointing actually, because I bought the rifle I always wanted... a model 70 featherweight, with a leupold vx3, and although it shoots good, the venture shoots better

And you've got a cheaper alternative for a good deer and bigger rifle? lol

Walmart sells both for $25/box. If thats too much per round for a hunter, then how can you afford tags, licenses, gear, and gas to get to where you need to go? Lol

Are you serious? Dude can't even afford commas or periods!

I have a .308 and a .30-06 ... and a few others.

I do not hunt bear and, here on Vancouver Island, the deer are a tad smaller than say Alberta .. and typically a long shot is 300 yards or so.
So, in practical terms, whether I carry a .308 or a .30-06 really makes very little difference here.

Having said that, my preference is for neither.
- In my short-action rifles, I prefer shooting my 7mm-08 (Kimber) to my .308 (Kimber)
- In my long-action rifles, I prefer shooting my .270 (Win70 Fwt) to my .30-06 (Win70 SG)

By shooting, I mean at the range, not hunting. And I prefer them just because - no real reason.
For hunting, as I implied above, the deer don't seem to care so much about my preferences.

My recommendation: Buy what looks right, feels right and, for you, shoots straight.
And practice, practice, practice (in various hunting positions).
Because ANY of these calibers are quite capable of merely wounding a deer if you misplace the shot.

My 2 cents. And worth every penny!

I could be wrong but I don't think that you can bait hunt deer, which is what the OP "mostly" is looking to do, in Alberta.

I would have flipped your recommendation. Unless you're in the mountains there is no reason that a regular 8lb 30-06 wouldn't be a perfect walking around rifle. And I'd rather use it to bait hunt bears than the 308, though either would be fine. Add a 1.5-5x Leupold and you're in business.

8lbs scoped is my max when i walk for hunting
i have a .308 whit a lightweight scope 3-9 7.5lbs
i sold my old 30-06 whit a 4-12 it was 9.2 pound whit sling and i feel it after 2 hrs or scouting and tracking
A nice HVA 30-06/20.5 inch and a nice 1-4 or 2x7 is the perfect under 200m gun go whit a nice 180 bullet and dont look back

I would like some advice in regards to which of the following would be a better hunting rifle in Alberta - the options are
- Thompson Center Venture .30-06
- Savage 10TR .308 WIN (20" barrel)

Typically hunting for deer - but want the option to go for larger game

Thanks

Both these cartridges are ballistic twins until the the 200 and 220 grain bullet is utilized. Only the 30-06 shoots these bullet weights.
