Hunting/Shooting, Myths and Misconceptions

I've heard it a few times now that military FMJ ammo is more powerful than the commercial equivalent therefore you should never use military ammo in sporting rifles. I've also heard that the current military ammo (I'm assuming they mean 5.56 mm nato) is so fast that it kills by speed alone.

I know of a nice, almost new rifle that was sold very cheeep cuz the former owner had got inebriated and shot a whole box (20) of shells through it one after another and burnt the bbl out of it.

.

If you throw a bullet into the fire it will blast off rounds ie the movies when the ammo box catch's on fire.
My cousin started chuckin 22 shells into the camp fire BANG BANG BANG :runaway: and freaked out the inlaws which pretty much cured everyone of this myth:D

well heres one for the big swamp donkey hunters..... .....when that sob is down......cut his legs off.......
so he cant run away...yupper,s proved it my self this year..when i got no moose:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

That is not a myth entirely. There are many rounds in military calibers that were designed to be fired in machineguns and exceed SAAMI specs. And yes, some of the regular milspec. rounds are hotter than civy correspondents, but the big one is machinegun ammo.

30-30 is too light or a minimum cartridge for deer.

A fine older rifleman in Edmonton told me this once (with tongue in cheek after listening to some rant by a customer in the store):

Yip...7 Rem mag shoots straight an level for 'bout 300 yards....then it starts to rise a bit.

Exactly, I had a dork at the range that said a bullet rises after it leaves the barrel

Another myth, a belted cartridge is inherently less accurate

You need to use fresh ammo every year as the powder goes bad

The bullet was going too fast and did not expand properly pencilled right through

Apparently in BC, they were considering banning the Remington 7mm Magnum because it was just to deadly on moose. "Was like a laser beam". So the say.

If you're using a shotgun for bear defense - load birshot as your first round. That way you'll blind the bear and can take him out at your leasure as he sits there confused.

How bout the one that the 30/30 is so under powered that a bullet fired from it can be caught in a ball glove at 300yds.
Yikes, makes you wonder if Darwin was correct.

Just thought of another.
Now this was touted from a guy I know, and used to work with. He's a guide of some repute(good and bad), he stated that " the 7mm Rem. Mag. is the biggest wounding calibre in existance".
I know, I know, but read my final sentance above.

How about the old "You can tell a deers age by his antlers" I still hear variations of this one to this day and it drives me nutz!!!
"Look at how knarley them horns are he must be a hardwood buck" Ya right Yumpty.:p
"Look how dark that deer is, must be a Swamp buck" Whatever Clem.
Here is one that gets the spechul award in my book... "Deer always walk into the wind...." Well there must be one big bunch of deer Piled up against the Pacific Ocean then bubba!:dancingbanana:
