Hunting with 40 S&W

Shot placement/bullet construction are the key with such low power rounds in other words make the first shot count and it will do the job.

Which Saskatchewan are you in? Whitetail deer are in season until 07DEC.

Saskatoon WMZ is muzzleloader and shotgun only so your CX-4 is no good, but if you have a spot to hunt in this zone, talk to me about borrowing a shotgun or catching a ride to another zone.
 
At close range this would be a great deer cartridge in my opinion. Out of that loooonggg barrel I'll bet you are 13-1400 fps with a 180gr. bullet depending on the load so I dont see penetration being a problem. Plus the benefit of minimal meat damage from the hydraulic shockwave that goes along with centerfire rifle calibers.
 
Here is my data for my 10mm you can find it here http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=918942 click on the attached files in post #2 if you wanted to look yes the 10mm is faster than a 40S&W why I am posting this is for those of you that think there are huge velocity gains with a longer barrel with a handgun cartridge this may not be completely true there is some but in the higher weights not much.

Velocities in bold are 10' from muzzle and 100 yards the other numbers are ft lbs of energy and other than the cast loads the rest are absolute top pressure 10mm loads for the powders I used.

Keep in mind your firing a 40 out of a longer barrel so instead of a 180gr @ 1000fps you can probably expect a 180gr to go 1200-1300fps. Most of the pistol round velocities are given out of a 4" barrel. Makes a difference when the barrel is 18.5"+.

As long as you're not treating it like a rifle round and making sure your shot is around 50 yards or less you should be fine.
 
Not limited to 5 shots in a center fire semi auto rifle? This is new to me. I thought only rimfires had no limit. I'd like to see proof of this from the regs.
 
The Storm uses a pistol mag = 10 shots instead of a rifle mag = 5 shots. If anyone can find in the regs where the pistol mag isn't allowed for hunting I would be interested to know. To my knowledge it isn't mentioned, however ignorance usually won't wash if the authorities call you on it.
 
A very good rule to go by is 1000 Foot lbs of energy required to cleanly kill whitetail.
(accepting the fact that you use an expanding type bullet) so if your rig developes that at 100 yds then that is your max range .If it only makes 1000 FP at 60 yds then limit your shots and you should be good to go to 60yds. Of course mileage always varies and I know some say you can kill one with a rimfire . But the above rule is a sound one.
good luck Lots of better rounds out there than a 40SW. Don't wound them and then chase them all over the woods. Enough of that goes on already. You can NEVER be over gunned but You can be under gunned!!!

Then go read the regulations. Some guy on the internet, e.g. me, telling you, isn't proof. Even if I have read the regulations.

Semi auto pistols can have up to 10 rounds capacity.

If the pistol and the rifle uses the same magazines, and the magazine is classed as a pistol magazine, you may use the pistol magazines in your rifle.
 
Rather than speculate, I grabbed the current Alberta Hunting Regs and reviewed them. It specifically states that: "It is unlawful to set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game: an auto loading firearm that has the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine." That is on page 12 of the regs booklet if anyone is interested. I guess that means that even though it is legal to possess a 10 shot pistol mag for a rifle you can't use that mag to hunt big game (in Alberta anyways). Bummer for me.

I've never seen a similar regulaiton in the BC regs, so it's really where you are.
 
Sasktachewan has no magazine capacity restriction for semiautomatic rifles in their game regulations, which would allow you to legally hunt with an M1 Garand or a rifle that takes 10 round pistol magazines.
