Now I don't have a .223 but I'd like to know if it's legal in BC to hunt deer with a .223? I know in at least Alberta it's a no-no but some people state it's all of Canada and others state its only some provinces.

I thought the regs stated that you can't, but when I went over them, all I could find is where is said no to rimfire, yes to centerfire, and yes to shotguns with a stipulation of larger than 20 gauge and no 1 sized buck or larger. There was no stipulations listed for which centerfires were allowed.

There was a stipulation listed for Bison than a centerfire round had to be over a certain grain and velocity....

So can someone point me to the right section of the Regs to clear this up?

Unless they changed the regs, it is legal. It's in the "Thou shalt not's", "It is uunlawful to..."

Can't hunt big game with a rimfire, IIRC, is the only limit. After that, it's a matter of personal skill and personal ethics. I'll leave that up to you to decide, but I am comfortable with it under the circumstances that I would shoot a deer with a .223, and a proper game bullet, as opposed to the most commonly available ammo, which is loaded with a Varmint bullet.

The guys that have used them say the Barnes bullets perform well.

Cheers

Thanks for clearing that up!

I know about being careful to get the right bullet. My dad one year bought a box of Winchester 30-30 from Canadian Tire and sadly didn't notice they were Varmint loads until we were out hunting and he got the box out to load up. Luckily though we found 2 big game rounds in the bottom of our loose round ammo box. Got our deer that year.

"...it's all of Canada..." Nope. Goes by each Province's hunting regs. Like trevj says, use the right bullet. Your rifle's rifling twist will determine if it'll shoot heavy bullets well enough for deer.
"...stipulation listed for Bison..." Very good reason for that too. They're big buggers.

Yeah bison are very big, used to work on a Bison Farm near here. Very large piles of crap..... :(

"...Very large piles of crap..." We'll move 'em to Ottawa. They'd fit right in.
A 1,000 pound bull yields about 21 pounds of strip loin steaks. 23.5 pounds of Prime Rib. 559 pounds of meat in total. 160 pounds of sausage/burger meat. Very lean, yummy, meat, so it is.

I haven't have a real Bison burger in so long.... :(

I should go out and pick up a couple!

most places are shot gun must be 20g or bigger when loaded with shot a 410 slug is fine in ontario for deer as for rifle a center fire is needed no rimfire for deer .DUTCH

Legal in BC and it will work fine if you use a god bullet and pick your shots.:)

The bison rule is sorta bunk, but that's what happens when the ill informed make rules...

Just last night I watched Les Johnson (Predator Quest) flatten a good sized Texas wild hog with a .204 Ruger with a dang 32gr Hornady varmint bullet! No reason why a .223 with a decently constructed bullet wouldn't kill medium game with a proper hit under the right circumstances.

Under ideal conditions, anything is possible. Perhaps not recommended or the greatest choice, but yes, possible. I recall stories from my uncle of my Dad shooting Mule Deer many years ago west of Edmonton, with a Cooey 22LR. In another example, a woman by name of Mrs. Betty Wendle of the Wells/Barkerville area was known for her successful exploits Grizzly hunting using a 22 Savage High Power. As a worst case scenario, I wouldn't want to specifically be hunting Bear with a 223, especially if the situation 'happened' to turn from 'sugar to s**t' and I had to depend on that choice to anchor the animal, and quickly. It doesn't offer the level of stopping power I'd feel comfortable with.

My grandfather used to shoot deer back during the depression with a .22LR because that's all they had at the time and you needed to feed the family somehow.

Also there was a Park Warden or whatever you call them from Jasper back in the 60's or 70's who used to kill problem bears with nothing more than a .22.

do you even read your regs first before posting?

do you even read the OP first before posting?

Look for the spot where it says "when I went over them" (concerning the regs). It's ok not everyone know hows to read, it's sort of becoming a lost art on CGN.

pathetic trolling indeed....

I wish people wouldn't get their dander up so fast on these threads. What's the point in getting nasty?
I was surprised when Drache said he had gone over the regulations, but still asked if the 223 was legal. He even pinted out the part where any centre fire was legal.
But not worth causing hard feelings over.

On another matter, Johnn, you mention the possibility of meeting a grizzly when hunting.
That became more than a possibility for a hunter on Saturday, here. A friend was going on a quad ride up a mountain when he met a fellow coming down with a four point mule deer on his quad. The hunter said when he was dressing the deer, a grizzly came along and tried to chase him away!
I didn't get too many details, but I think all ended well.
