hunting with a muzzlebrake without ear protection

If you shoot without hearing protection, you are damaging your hearing, brake or not.
A handful of shots may not "bother you", but hearing damage can result.

This. Brake or not you're damaging your hearing. Tinnitus sucks. Being deaf sucks. I use those ear plugs on a string, that way they're always there when I need em.

Tinnitus does suck but at least I have a doctors note saying I am tone deaf to the frequency a large majority of women speak in. Seems like a fair trade, a slight ringing in my ears to trade out the constant nagging sounds.:d

Yeah but you can always get a new gal, you can't get a new set of ears at the bar or on plenty of fish.

I have the same problems, tinnitus and tone deaf but predominantly my right ear, left side is still fine...

told the wife she has to change her tone or I can hear her... she suggested that a slight adjustment with a cast iron frying pan will fix my hearing... So far I have resisted her suggestion.

I still hunt without hearing protection, its too late for me now. I got tinnitus from riding my bike for years without a helmet where it was legal, or hearing protection. Nowadays I always wear ear plugs on the bike. For the odd time I pull the trigger while hunting I can't see it making a difference at this point.

One of the first guns I bought was a Mossberg 4x4 in .30-06 that came with a muzzlebrake. I fired it only once without hearing protection, and would never do so again. It didn't cause me any permanent damage that I can tell, but my ears sure didn't like it. They were sore for a couple days IIRC.

^^^^ Not too smart to ever shoot without protection for sure

You should always use hearing protection when shooting....the fact we have laws which prohibit the use of devices that would bring the sound level of a gun shot to non damaging levels is simply RETARDED!
Just my 2 cents worth though.

Agreed. The UK has some interesting firearms law but they get to use suppressors. Maybe one day, but not any time soon here.

LOL...this for the win. !!

If your ears hurt afterwards, you did damage.

Perhaps, though I didn't notice any hearing problems from that specific incident. I do have mild tinnitus, but I've put my ears through no shortage of abuse from loud music, machinery, and gunfire. Can't really lay the blame on a single cause.

I had a 300 RUM with a brake. I took a shot at a moose without hearing protection and just about dropped the rifle from the pain in my ears. I couldn’t hear anything for about 4 hours. That was the last shot that a I fired out of that rifle. I sold it shortly afterwards. Do not ever shoot a braked rifle without hearing protection under any circumstance. I shoot regular Hp rifles without hearing protection while hunting. No issues there.

Read once that the most common reason for hearing loss, at least on the left side in North America, is driving with the window down. I've always had a helmet when on the motorcycle, usually with music playing on my ear buds.

I tend to skip hearing protection for .22LR and some .223 trips but anything larger I use either electronic and/or in ear protection. Only forgot to put them on once when using a brake and I hope I never do that agian. (No dogs allowed either for these trips.)

Just get a pair of electronic ear protection. It will allow you to hear normal. But it will cut off at a DB, to save hearing damage.

I'm sceptical of this statement. Now, I've never used such a thing.
But I do wear state of the art 'Hearing Enhancers' LOL. A Life career of oilpatch and a watermark injury doing it means AB WCB supplies them til I die.
Mine will 'catch' the report of medium to low powered firearms; 303, 30-30, 9.3 x 57 and such NP. 12 guage NP. 45 ACP or 44 Mag ( Mare's Leg), sure.
But crank up a 'burner' and you know it. 357 Mag, a 7mm Rem mag or such will get by them...painfully
