You are darn close to Manitoba where your .223 would be legit for deer.I curse the powers that be every day that I can use my Tavor for deer!
I'm considering rebarreling it to 6.8 SPC or one of the other 5.56mm cased wonder rounds.
I am not a bullpup guy, but I think if a person has a black/red rifle, you have a moral obligation to hunt with it with the hopes some lieberal granola eating tree hugger will see you and faint.
Care to elaborate?"Not to mention, anyone who says .223 isn't big enough for deer obviously hasn't used it, and if they have they didn't use it properly."
"I shot the buck at about 80 m away broadside in the right lung with a 45gr Winchester Silvertip Varmint round."
Never thought I'd read two sentences like this in the same post. While I can agree with your first statement, the second is the exact reason some provinces don't let hunters use .223 for deer. I would call using 45 gr varmint bullets on deer unethical, but hey, that's just my opinion. Congrats on your successful hunt

Congratulations.
I hope you dragged the carcass past the guy who took up your regular stand and thanked him for spooking out your game.
This thread is useless, without the right spices for venison.
^^^^^^^
Congrats on the deer. I havent the chance to use my 223 on deer yet but I did get this brown(black) bear with my Mini 14(bought off a gunnut!). To back you up, yes it works. I used 55 gr Win.Supreme Bal.Tips. Shot placement is key. I spotted him about 1km away and snuck up on him. At 150 yrds, I shot this guy broadside. Went straight through the heart and I found my bullet, nicely mushroomed(surprisingly) under neath the skin on the far side. It pierced through the ribs, destroyed the heart, and through the far ribs and under the skin.
Sorry for the hijack!!![]()
LOL nice kill, you put a lot of faith in your accuracy.
Well, yeah, if you were to shoot a larger bullet, it may pass clean through, but I think the biggest factor in favour of the .223 cartridge is that the bullets stay in the animal. Or, as has been said over and over, the energy of the bullet in flight is fully transferred to the animal. With a larger bullet, only a fraction of the energy is transferred. Sure, you may smash through bones, but exactly how much hydrostatic shock is actually transferred with a bullet that passes clean through? IMHO Bigger isn't always better. Not trying to piss in your cornflakes cancer, you made it clear you waited for a broadside shot at close range but I'm sure you agree the cartridge/bullet combo would be a lot less forgiving than some others...say if the range were a little further, and ones shot placement slightly off. That bullet into a shoulder shot would fail in an epic fashion, where others would penetrate through and result in a dead deer. I know .223 for deer has been argued to death in various threads, so I will leave yours alone now haha
Again, congrats on your successful hunt
Aside from removing the secondary spring, there's not much you can do.Has anyone tried to do a trigger job to increase hunting accuracy? I know we all take the extra spring off, but anyone gone any further to reduce the pull or make a little more crisp?
