hunting with lever actions

I never really liked the BLR's...had a 30-06 one once - they just don't feel like a lever to me.

You're absolutely right on that score.

They look shiny and inviting to hold and behold but they lack the feel and balance of a winchester lever carbine.

A winchester was never designed for a scope and all the others were with high combs.

A winchester just feels right and you know that it was meant to bring home the bacon and not take out groundhogs at 1000yds.

I don't eat groundhogs.

I love my blr in 308 but i agree that it just aint the same feel as the win's ive held. I really want a win 30 30 in my collection... to bad funds are tight fight now.

I've been waiting for the past couple of months for my local dealer to bring one into the store for me to check out, as to the feel and balance before I would commit to buying one.

I have an option on a 444 timber carbine and I will choose one but only one.

I have a two Brownings .308 and .300 win mag, a Win Mod 94 30-30 and a Marlin 1895CB in 45-70. Of the 4 the Marlin is the most accurate. The Winchester the most handy and the Brownings the prettiest. If I could only keep one it would be the Marlin.

HA

I hunt my Savage 99c 308 and it carries just like a Winnie 94 plus the C model is a DM. I am working on loads for a 1900 vintage 1894 in 38-55 which has some really decent irons on it. 26in barrel and a very accurate rifle already. Have some cast sized to load for it that should make it even more accurate. I would like to hunt it next season as well as my Savage 99 250-3000. Love my levers too and maybe should pick up a Marlin to round out the group. You just cant have too many levers. Also have a Winchester 9422, Henry Golden Boy 22lr as well as a BSA Martini single shot lever target rifle with Marbles peeps. Not a single safe queen in the lot.

I too am a lever fan. Easy to carry, fast to shoulder and reload. Depending on the caliber good for any big game (except maybe large grizzly) in North America. I think I have all the bases covered with my small collection. A mod 94 (circa 1942) in 30-30, a mod 94BB in 356 win, a win mod 9422, and a Savage 99F in 300 savage. Only the 99 has a scope the rest are Williams Fool proof peep sights.

Hi. Hunting what? The suitablity of any rifle for hunting has nothing to do with its action.
A 94 depends on the chambering. Dislike 'em in .30-30 myself, too much felt recoil for the power of the cartridge and the weight of the rifle.
In any case, it's not about the action.
The .30-30 Win 94 has killed more deer than any other rifle.
Three pages of responses over 4 days and not one from burtjani.
Pictures of a 99 are here. http://www.google.ca/images?hl=en&cr=countryCA&biw=1020&bih=617&q=savage+
Geezuz!

I don't think that full auto would be considered suitable for hunting. ;)

What makes the 94 "suitable" is the package. The feel, lenght, action, balance, light weight, caliber, it's ability to quick point and fast follow-up shots.

I only have a couple of Winchesters but no one can deny the rationale for the popularity of the 94 and/or any of the variations.

On a personal note.......

I don't collect any specific type or model or even caliber of gun, I just collect what tickles my interest and shoots like it's supposed to. As a golfer has a bag full of clubs to choose from, to fit various specific shots, I have a couple of safes that hold something for every condition/situation and I like the luxury of having choice.

I don't hunt, I harvest. I don't grab a gun and go hunting, I practice first. I don't wound, I kill. I know as much about my prey as I do about processing the meat afterwards. I take pride in a clean harvest and the enjoyment of my bounty afterwards with my friends.

As Tom Knapp says......Think safety first and then have a good hunt.

a lever action has never been used for hunting.

there has never been one thread on the topic before.

anyone to dumb to use the search feature for such a basic, over discussed question should by all means be given a loaded firearm and sent into the woods

99 all the way, for lever I find the 99 has the tightest action over anything I have shot in a winchester. Not knocking winnies just my preference is all.

I am a Winchester guy, but this year I used an old Savage 99 on my hunt. And it was a great rifle, did a good job, handled well and generally helped me to feel manly (although any firearm does this for me) :p

I do all my hunting with my 99's except for grouse. For grouse I use my BL 22.If savage had made a 99 in .22 I'd be using that lol.

I used to hunt with my Ruger 30-06 but since I got my first 99 it rarely comes out anymore.

I hear ya, almost everything is too much. I have had occasion to use rocks in the past, its a bit more primal, but you save ammo.

4 for 2006

Here you are, the four on the right, the 5th on the left was shot by another member of the gang the same morning. It went like this. 3 came running through my ridge after I had just listened and felt 2 bucks rutting I literally felt the ground vibrate under my feet.
It was the 2 small bucks and the dow. The bigger of the 2 was leading I took him first after one of my rounds entere his back he dropped. The dow and the other buck busted west the same direction they came from but kept to the south of the ridge gut. Gave me time to reload. I took the dow she dropped. I thought 2 out of 3 aint bad but the other buck came back for the dow, I had time to reload again it took 3 rounds to put down the smallest buck. He kept bobbing his head after taking a round in the chest and a busted leg. I placed the cross hairs on his head, I grazed the bottom of his antler but the impact was enough to finish him. Everything went quit.

Then the crasher shows him self. He's walking the same path the others came out of. I leaned back so he couldn't see me and and loade 2 rounds just before he walked directly in front of me at 50 yds he walked into my crosshairs and I fired he bolted south I took another shot he kept going. I found blood 100 yds south vound him 150 yds it was a liver shot no blood until he bleed out. This was 9am the Friday of the firs week, the work wasn't over until 9pm. We had tagged out that year.
