Hunting with Norinco m-14

I got good groups at 200 yards with some 150 grain SP reloads and and took mine out once for deer.

I found the iron sights inadequate for the first 20/30 minutes or so of legal shooting time (it was a cloudy day) and probably would have been just as bad on an overcast evening, so I'd like to have a scope mounted and sighted in before I try her again. The length was a bit unwieldy in the tree stand but the newer short rifles would fix that problem.

I hunt moose and whitetails with mine. 168g Federal works fine.

I've gotta 30 rounds of Barnes 150gr TTSX loaded up right now for load development but just have made it to the range yet.

One might suspect the Barnes TSX could be the M14's ultimate game bullet, rock hard solid copper noses and the best hunting bullet made. Seems a match made in heaven, never tried them yet in a M14.

I like it,,, I am going to order one this week( I hope) I want a rifle that I am going to use all the time, for the range and to hunt...I like to reload my 45-70 so I am sure I can reload alot of ammo for the 308 just for fun. I am liking some of the great paint jobs that you guys have done,,keep up the great work

THANKS

I use mine when ever I can justify it... It went for a ride off the 4 wheeler this year at about 30mph ... Went end over and landed in about a foot of water ... Threw it back over my shoulder got back to the camp checked the bore.... Loaded the mag and shot 5 rounds into a pie plate at 100yds off hand ... Tough as they come and I would never sell it ... Might even buy a shortie if they ever come back in stock

.. I also use ttsx or accubonds both shoot excellent

Well the one I got shoots what ever I put in it just fine.

Its heavy to carry around so I wouldn't want to lug it around for hunting

Is it reliable yes...

can you drop it in the mud and have it fill up yes it has a nice open side for that so don't drop it in thick mud... Does it jam with sand and stuff like that not really just keep it clean and ready to go and it will do just fine and chug away.

Yes I agree that the TSX would be the better choice but I'm going to try and see how these ones workout. I've got lots 168 TSX on hand and it I'll be switching the to those once these are gone.

Get out there Katana! I am hitting the range this friday am, come on out.

I thought we weren't supposed to use anything heavier than 150 gr in our Norcs.

169 grain with the proper propellant is a common load for the m14. When you start shooting commercial 308 with a heavy bullet (180) and an unknown propellant and pressure curve, you run the risk of accellerated wear and breakage of your m14. 169gr with the right powder is treating your m14 properly. Mine likes 169 grain bullets with 4895 powder. Sorry, I can't remember the loading off the top of my head, but its on the light end, like around 41 grains.

Mine will shoot 180s very well... But I NEVER run the gas system when shooting them... Maybe I shouldn't do that but I've never had any issues

I hunt with mine also. I use Hornady A-Max 168grs. and get great long distance shots if required. I hunt from a blind as the weapon is too heavy to carry around all day. Go for Moose and Deer every year with it, and will be tying black bear in the spring. The load is quite sufficient for most north American game, although I would shoot 180 grs. for grizzly, the riffle will take it although I would not shoot many rounds through it with that size.

Hunted with mine this past fall, used Federal 150's in it, might have got something if I hadn't mounted a scope, a nice 5 or 6 pointer came outta the woods about 30 yards away as I was walking up the trail, I got the rifle up but couldnt get my head setup behind the scope before he bounded off through the woods. Needless to say my heart was pounding, I was scouting out a new area, didn't expect to walk up on one like that, specially as I wasn't being that quiet. I might have gotten a shot with open sights, coulda gotten a sight picture quicker.

Ha wow, a real assessment of hunting without all of the mystic crap others spew. It's all about scouting, chance, and quick target acquisition.

I'd use my m305 for hunting but the mule deer on vancouver island don't need a 308win, it's just extra weight. I run around with my 858
