Hunting with Ruger #1's

Hello all!!

I have always held the Ruger #1 in great esteem as I consider it an elegant rifle.

I first had a #1B in 338 Win mag, and while Im not an Avid hunter as some, when that 225 grain Hornady bullet at an honest 2800 FPS connected, nothing ever walked away. Many times the results were simply spectacular from a "Whomp - Flop" perspective.

In a fit of stupidity I sold it. I am now working on replacing it. I was even able to track it down here on the board, three buyers later, and this last one will not let it go!!

As a result, and partly from nostalgia, I was wonder who else hunts with the Number 1 singel shot rifle, what your cartridge is, what you like about it, and what you would change.

Please, feel free to includ pictures!!

I used a No. 1 light sporter in 7x57 to take a few mule deer--I liked it and it shot well but I found I simply liked a bolt action better.

I have had several other #1's and #3's in several chamberings but did not hunt with any of them except a #3 in .22 Hornet--It as also the only one that I could not get to shoot well on a consitent basis.

There is a lot of "hunt" in hunting with a single shot and no so much "shooting" so if that is what you like, then go for it.

I used to have a No1-H in 416 Rem, used it for a couple years before I sold it.
Here's a moose I took with it in 2002

A Number 1 "International" in 7x57 goes hunting with me for a few days every year, generally for whitetails. It's handy and consistently accurate. The rifle wears a 2-7 Leupold Vari-X II which has turned out to be a very good match for this rifle and cartridge combination.
 
I hunted for close to ten years with a no 1. The first one was in 25-06 then a 280. Had another in 22-250 and one in 300 winmag but I spent more time at the range than hunting with those two. In the last few years I have gone to a semi custom bolt gun but I have a hankerin for another single shot. Might be time to get another, maybe I should try a no 3 this time?
 
I too like the #1. I had one in 243 which I sold to a friend for his son.

I too, however, somehow prefer a bolt action. Not sure why... just do LOL
 
I have hunted with a few & still keep a couple here 243.30-06& a 375H&H.
Also had a few #3s over the years.
Going to try the Encore one of these years have one with a few barrels 300wm,7mm mag,45-70,& a 243 barrel.DAN>>>
 
I too have loved the #1's and I too in a moment of weakness sold my last one a 30-06 with a great piece of walnut......I would love to have it back.

I am in the market for a 30-06 or 7X57 if anyone else out there is feeling weak and feels they no longer need it.

Don't even talk to me about #1 Rugers!! I have owned about a dozen over the years, and regretfully, have none at present. My favorite was a #1AB in 7x57 that I sold a number of years ago. Next, a 3-letter serial numbered #1AB [not catalogued, so custom] in 222 Remington. Then there was the 375 H&H, Damn, should have hung on to that! On and on it goes. I'll be buying one again before too long, I can feel that unscratchable itch beginning... Eagleye.

It should go with me for whitetails!
I take along my #1 in 375 H&H for moose as a back-up to my Sako.
Who am I kidding, I just like to take alot of guns with me;)
 
When I had my #1 in .416 Rigby I thought it would be cool to have a matching #1 in 7X57 marked .275 Rigby. Unfortunately it never happened and the .416 was lost in a fire.

My .416 became semi-custom because I wanted the scope mounted farther forward than was possible with the factory quarter rib. I had a custom quarter rib made, inletted for Tally QD's, and mounted a 1.5-5X Leupold so that the ocular was even with the face of the falling block. This gave me an unobstructed loading port, and ensured I would never be hit with the scope regardless of position I was shooting in. If there was a slight disadvantage it was that I could only use the scope up to 3X or I would loose the full field image. This proved to be of no consequence, and I could shoot well out to 300 yards with my load of a 350 gr X or a 350 gr Magtip ahead of 102 grs of H-4350 in Norma brass.
 
A No. 1 in 45-70 ... wears a Leupold 1-4 VX-II ... would like a No. 1-V in
25-06 too, maybe even a 9.3 x 74R. to shoot some of those "lady-fingers" out of.

Ruger's recoil pads are like hockey pucks ... bye-bye. Grind to fit D752B Pachmayr or Sims much better. You may want to change the stock "pitch" while you're at it ... I prefer mine "neutral", not pitched down. Most have plain-jane vanilla wood. Lots of room for improvement there. Triggers can be less than what they should be, but a good 'smith can help get it to brak at about 1500 grams, crisp, no creep, no overtravel. . Don't like their safety slides either ... they stick-up enough to catch an ejected rimmed empty ... O.K on the bench, but not really what you want. Tap the front down to change the contour, grind & reshape the nose, reblue ... fixed.

over the years lve owned over 2 dozen ruger no 1's.in various calibers ranging up to the only one l have left in 50-140.Their very capable of superb accuracy and are a very strong action suitable for any wildcat a fellow has in mind to build.
 
My tree-stand rifle is a #1-B in .280 with a Leupold M8 6x42 on it and it is one of two rifles that will never be sold or traded away. I kinda like the idea of having it buried with me a la the Vikings :D. I run 160 gr AccuBonds out of it at about 2600 fps for deer, moose and bear and have had outstanding results with both the load and the bullet.

I do wish that I could pare a couple pounds off of it as it's a bit much for toting all day long, but that's what my Model 94's and the Marling 336Y and 1895G are for...;)
