Hunting with SKS

Talked to one of the guys at SIR and he said a lot of their nork sks rifles go up north and guys use them for caribou. Its basicly a semi 30/30. Can't go wrong at less then 200m.
 
Hohoho....:) I don't know that people from north are so fond of SKS! But for sure an SKS wouldn't have any problem killing a caribou.

You should go get at least one of these plinkers! Fun to play with and fun to hunt with as they are light and reliable! If you broke the butt in the mountain, throw it away and grab another one, it only costs you 150 bucks! I even reload my own hunting ammo.

Good on a moving Coyote up to a 100 yards. Some people use them as Deer rifles. Not my first choice for big game, but the SKS will do the job with the right bullet.
 
While I agree with you on the balistics part, I had to say "No", as I love my 94 30/30 Winchester allot more. :D
 
Sure, I would have but I got tired of my sks and sold it. More accurate rifles are more interesting.

I do think that the SKS would make a perfect medium-game close-range gun. Wild pigs, for example.

Lol they aren't that bad. For a beginer hunter you can't beat the SKS. Cheep gun, cheep ammo, accurate enough.

SKS's work great on Queen Charlotte deer, since most shots are inside 100m and the deer are only slightly bigger than a large dog :cool: Plus, the damn things are so freakin' tough that there's a good chance you'll need a quick follow-up shot, in which case the semi-auto factor definetely comes into play. Practice your double-taps! :D
 
I have gone gopher and Coyote hunting with one. No problems.

I also hear lots of stories about guys using them on dear and bears.

They are a reliable gun in a proven caliibre.

There are better guns out there for hunting with.

But I dont know of a cheaper tool for the job that is as versatile and fun.
 
Just recently bought an SKS. Think I will give it a try on deer this year after I tune it up a bit. Not going to try shots much over 100 yards though as I don't want to risk wounding one.
 
Not to start a flame war, but I've yet to see any actual evidence to suggest that the 7.62X39 is the equilavent of the .30-30, anyone care to provide some along with sources?

And I don't think I'd personaly take an SKS out after anything as big as a deer, but dogs and groundhogs would be fun.

Marlin 336RC 30-30. 150gr (factory ammo) @ ~2050 fps
SKS 7.62x39 150 gr @ ~2100fps.


30-30 published ballistics are all VERY optimistic. Most are derived from 24" test barrels, whereas the typical 30-30 lever gun has an 18.5"-20" barrel. I have NEVER seen any 30-30 achieve the full published 2400fps with 150 gr bullets. Although, my 336 has a very strong receiver and action (they had the same action shooting 307Win, the 444 Marlin and the rimmed version of the 358 as well. All significantly more intense cartridges than the 30-30), and it's possible to load 30-30 '+P' ammo for it

I'll bet that at effective ranges the 7.62x39 has a simular effect to almost any other 30 cal round.

Heck the VC used to kill GIs hiding behind trees with them.
