If i got a 96 or 98 action in 9.3x57 how much gunsmithing would be involved to feed the smaller 250 savage? Could I possibly get by with just a barrel swap?

most of those Husqvarna's in 9.3x57 can't really take a lot of abuse I would not go with a more powerful cartridge like the x62

And why would that be? Lot's of Mauser 96/98 in 9.3x62 out there. I have not heard of any problem with them. It's that "Internet believe" that M96 actions are weak... what a misconception that is!

It should be just a simple barrel swap. Just for the hell of it I ran a magazine full of .250 through one of my M98's and it fed beautifully. I would prefer an M98 over the M96.

Tradex frequently sells 96 and 98 that were originally 9.3x57 and have been converted to x62.

The only thing i would be concerned about is the mag is too short for the heavier bullets in x62 in a m96 if you did the conversion yourself. The ones sold by tradex have the mag modified to fit the longer bullets. M98 shouldn't have any issues what so ever.

Well 250's parent case is an 30-06 is it not? At .473" it is identical to the 8 x 57, the bolt face will not be a problem. Magazine, who knows, but bolt face is identical.

Hmm, my 98 in 9.3 x 57 is likely as strong as it needs to be. Perhaps ' Blanket pronunciations ' should be amended...

I was wondering how much stronger it could be?

My 98 seems to handle the 366 Wagner just fine. Interestingly enough, Peter Paul Mauser thought it was strong enough for the 9.3x62. Silly over optimistic Germans!

I have bigger guns so no need for this project to be a larger caliber. I want another coyote rifle but something different
A case colored Mauser 98 action and metal parts with a deep blued barrel about 21" long and a nice figured piece of walnut would be nice to carry while I'm calling song dogs. As for the caliber I load for 25/06 so I have bullets on hand and the 250 savage gives up very little over other varmint rifles out to 300 yards

Yes! The world needs more .250 Savage rifles out there, so go for it! You should be good with just a barrel swap, but it would be good to check feeding with a few cartridges beforehand. Occasionally there will be a picky rifle that proves everyone wrong. I re-barreled a Savage bolt-action in .308 to .250, and it works perfectly. My go-to deer calibre is the .250 now, since I have the 9.3 x 64mm Brenneke for moose and elk.

Brownell's still sells Shilen short-chambered barrels in .250 Savage, pre-threaded for small-ring Mausers. Takes away a lot of the work.
Since you have to do the final finish-ream on the chamber anyway, has anyone out there ever cut one with an Ackley-Improved profile?

Actually .30-06's parent case is 7x57mm as the US military and Springfield Armoury (original one) just took some captured Spanish 7x57mm M1893 Mauser rifles and their ammo taken during their war against the Spanish in Cuba and stretched the case a little and opened it up to .30 cal.

Before that all American military cartridges were rimmed.

Both the .30-03/.30-06 and Springfield rifles were blatant copies of superior German military technology that preceded them by at least a decade.

You often hear people quote that the .30-06 is the parent case when in fact it was the 7x57mm Mauser cartridge.
