Ok so.......I have spent alot of money in the past trying to be a bit "different" and not follow the herd. I have had mixed results some good, some great and some downright terrible.

I hesitated for too long on getting myself a 10/22 cause I wanted something a bit different and more original and after years of little to no support with aftermarket parts for other offerings. What do ya know .... I broke down, bought one and after my first range trip my only thoughts were WTH didn't I get one of these years ago!
Needles to say I love it.

I have proven this to myself with other items as well only to find out ...the bloody pack was right..

It may have taken longer than I would have liked and alot more money than it should have, but I think I have finally learned my lesson....err maybe....hopefully.

I have wanted a target rifle (2-400yrd) for a long time and have been eyeing alot of "different" models, but i think i am ready to join the pack and pony up for a Rem 700 based on aftermarket support and parts availability.
even though I had my eye keen on saving up for a savage 10ba,I do love savage accuracy though :/

Now...
The caliber will be 308 (not interested in anything else)
I have about 1000$ to put down on one...
what kind of model should I be looking at (prefer heavy barrel, target type "tacticool" or laminate)?
What can I expect out of the box accuracy wise (I have a decent 3200 bushnell scope to start with)?
are they really as good of a project as they are made out to be ?

and as a final question...should I just stick to my "different" & keep saving for the 10ba ?? Would the accuracy/looks cost compare?
given the 2200$ cost of the savage?

Personally I love my 5R milspec and it was just a bit more than a grand and seems to cover everything but maybe the tacticool. I shoot about 3/4 MOA with Blackhills match ammo and Minox scope.
 
if you have your heart set on a Remington then grab the 40x 308 that's in the equipment exchange.............it will only go up in value if you decide later that you want to go in a different direction
 
I hear they shoot pretty well and they are a decent rifle but you wouldn't want to take it anywhere in the bush if your hauling gear that's for sure. But if your only shooting targets no problem. With the 700 there are all kinds of chassis options and parts, etc and you'd have a rifle you can use for both hunting and targets. Just my two cents.
 
If you decide to get a Savage, you don't need to go to the 10BA. You can go with something like the 12 benchrest and get amazing out of the box accuracy and you can then order something like a Shillen pre-fit barrel and if you can get your hands on a head space guage, you can change the barrel your self.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I honestly don't know, but don't you have to have a gunsmith machine a barrel from a blank for a Remington which involves sending it away and waiting for it to be done and sent back to you? Or are there pre-fit barrels available for them?
 
Silen, I am having similar thoughts so I appreciate your posting. The remington 700 in the Tac21 chassis looks like a real winner to me. The problem is when handling the Savages in the shop, they look and feel amazing. It is hard to ignore such an emotional draw towards the Savage in this configuration. Seems to me like either way you win. Toss a coin, or go with what makes more economic sense for your situation at the moment. Somebody who owns both should chime in and do both of us a favour.

McGowan makes Remington prefits that headspace with a barrel nut in much the same way as a savage, and if you noticed the new remington 783 rifles have a accuracy improving barrel nut installed on them as well.........

Given how often most people change barrels I wouldn't think this is a huge problem.
 
The savage BA comes in a 308.........

what it boils down to is how you want to "build" a rifle or customize it........if it is just a stock then Tikka is out, if you want a target trigger then savage, rem and tikka are all in. If you want to later install a new match barrel then savage will be the cheaper route, all of the 3 actions can be squared and trued if you want to go that route, however they don't necessarily require this, again its your preference
 
Remington is like Buick. They've been around for a long time but Buick manufactured ####ty cars for a long time and now are paying the price.

The others are like Honda. No one really wants to drive a Civic but God damn they are reliable and get the job done.
 
back to your original questions...........with your scope your going to get mediocre accuracy at longer range as you lack magnification, second if you don't reload then your only going to get the accuracy you can achieve with factory ammo that is produced to work in every rifle regardless of make.
so with that in mind it really doesn't matter what rifle you start with at this point........

There are still lots of 700 lovers... Give them time, they'll chime in on this.
