I bought an SKS!

Are the metal parts other than the bolt and bolt carrier blued or painted? How is the magazine capacity limited?

I have a silver bolt...so I think it's neither blued or painted. as for the magazine capacity and how it's limited...not a clue. I don't see any pins.

that said, we're having difficulty removing the bolt assembly. we pop the switch, pull the pin-thingy, but it won't budge. wiggles a bit...but just won't budge. we squired some gunk buster my brother bought and a bunch of cosmo oozed out, but considering how stuck fast it is, I'm not sure if it's excess cosmo that's got suction holding it in place or if something else is wrong. any suggestions on how to proceed?

oh yeh...found the piece of wood on the gas chamber and the chamber itself are not matching...took me a bit to notice the wood wasn't matching tho. don't know why...it's no where near as irridescent as the rest of the stock.

anyhoo, any helpful tips offered would be appreciated!

Mosin the problem is the housing at the back that the bolt slides back in to is what I can't get off. I release the flippy tab and the housing rocks back and forth and not even a hammer gets the housing off. Thought that link will let me take the bolt apart to avoid slam fires if I ever get the stupid housing off.

turn the top cover latch pointing up and then wiggle it out to the right , you may use a piece of wood for leverage across the latch till its out about an inch , while wiggling with your left thumb apply forward pressure against the back of the top cover .

got the problem fixed and I can assure you that it was a very small and kinda stupid mistake or rather stupid thing I didn't think of trying. Got the gun pulled apart and letting some Gun cleaner take out all the cosmo. First Center Fire Semi Auto I ever tried to take apart so I never thought of doing what I did.

i had a fella who bought 4 sks when i bought mine and he owned a few more, he seemed pretty knowledgeable about em he had picked out an "izzy" sks from the back etc etc, he told me that the black bayo was ceremonial or something to that effect, didnt mention anything about refurb.. mines got black bayo chrome chamber and bore and laminate stock, he picked it out said it was mint with matching numbers... so whats wrong with the black bayo?

nothin but it is what it is , a refurb. i got two black bayo myself. the bayo originally are silver (some coated gold) in color so anything else means its been refurb .

BTW: your chamber is not chrome, none of them are.

I was down there yesterday, I noticed one had the paint removed on the mag down to bare metal, I was pretty sure it was painted. The bore was dark, but likely that was the cosmoline.

fair enough, i suppose i meant the bolt. i guess its like any other gun i dont expect mine to be any less of a shooter because its a refurb, the black bayo looks great, laminate stock looks fantastic and is tough as nails, and im buying a knockaround shooter so i got a great gun for that..happy with the lil beast

Just be careful when checking out those sks's at lever because I noticed a few shiney bolt models that were obviously re-buffed. You could see waves in the finish. Probably just ground the paint off. So just because trhe carrier and all is shiney, it still needs more investigation. I figure on going to lever every other month and see what's surfaced. You never know. I think you can always sell them and get what you paid for them for back. Nothing wrong with refurbs either! And those laminate stocks.........
