Well I must of dumped around 1000rds down the barrel and decieded I better give it a good cleaning seeing how my buddy asked me to go out rabbit hunting tomorrow morning. So I started to take it all apart, it was going well untill I went to remove the two side pieces. They wouldnt' come apart. I went to youtube and figured out what was wrong. The mag release screw must be removed as well. No big deal. So I removed everything and knocked out the two pins and removed the trigger assembly. I just cleaned that up, it wasn't too bad. I then removed the action. Cleaned it all up, ( man it was dirty and gritty! ). Once it was all clean I went to reinstall the action. I had a little difficulty trying to compress the spring to get it back in. I tryed, and tryed, finally ending up bending the damn spring to the point where it broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I broke the spring which gives the action it's recoil!. I'm not sure of the actual names, but you must know what I'm talking about. I'll have to call the store where I bought the gun and see if they can order me in another spring. What a bummer. Looks like I'm taking the Mossberg 835 UlitMag rabbit hunting tomorrow now!!!!

Oh I must say... this gun will be a biaaatch to clean on a regular biasis. I guess once you get quick at removing all the screws, it will be ok. lol

I found mine pretty easy to take apart and clean, granted those little phillips screws that hold the stock together are easy to strip. Did you follow the instructions in the manual for putting it back together ? I'm wondering how you managed to break the spring as the guide rod keeps it straight once you have it compressed enough into the bolt to get everything lined up.

I bent my spring all to hell first time field stripping it. Called Mossberg and they sent me a new spring, UPS, free. Under warranty. Even though I told them it was totally my fault.

I then went onto youtube... and found this to be the best guide to field stripping and putting the action back together:

If carb cleaner is anything like brake clean, which I think it is. It will DESTROY plastic.

I use brake clean on almost everything at work. I've even used it on plastic parts without a problem. I clean my snap-on tools with it too that have plastic parts on them. I heard if you use brake clean on a gun it will leave behind a residue and then next time you fire it, it will produce toxic chemicals.:stirthepot2:

If a gun breaks during a simple cleaning, then maybe it's not as tactical as it is purported to be.

I feel bad for you.

That's not a fair comment. I followed the printed instructions in the manual, and was a bit hamfisted putting the action together and subsequently bent the spring all to shiat. My fault, not the rifle.

I use it on lots of stuff to, it's great for cleaning metal parts. My experiance with it is that it dries out plastic in a bad way and will lead to cracking.

They were talking about carb cleaners, which I think is very similar. I would not clean a gun with it thats for sure.
