I finally decided, my 1911 on steroids is a Coonan 357 mag....

The only thing holding me back from a Coonan is the grip shape. Not a fan of flat mainspring 1911's.
I wanted one initially years ago but when I realized I preferred arched mainsprings and grips that are ergonomically shaped to the hand the want faded.
Even a "bobbed" version would be an improvement but there's not much room to remove material.

Watching the gun recoil in Colion's video I could see some nice checkering of the straps being..... good or better.

It is not as bad a people think. this mag well view gives a pretty good idea.

the other pic makes it look almost the same which is not really the case (probably because the wraparound grip adds depth to the 1911) but we are not talking huge difference in circumference. i should probably measure to check.

I think some people are initially thrown off by the size because they have cut their teeth on the 1911, and expect the Coonan to feel pretty much the same, which it definitely doesn't. but it is not that big, easy to get use to and is certainly not uncomfortable for anyone with average sized hands. I've have pretty average sized hands and this pic shows me holding the Coonan.

I guess it's kind of big......

I've always wanted one. I still do. The black model appeals to me.
It was interesting to see the effect of the recoil in the Colion Noir video. He's no lightweight when it comes to shooting. It still kicked like a brute.
I'll watch for your targets JP. Enjoy the gun!

some slight differences - barrels, mags and rear sights I believe. maybe a few more

and just to note: the original model changed. There is a model A and B (model As had linked barrels, model Bs and new guns are linkless)

Interesting, thank you. I didn't actually remember the A model at all.

The old ones were super picky about ammo to cycle, that's the main thing I remember.

Cool thread! I have one on order through Wanstalls - pretty excited. I held one in-store and was surprised - I thought it would be heavier, but I found it to be quite comfortable (I do own a Mark 23 though lol!).

I wonder if the wooden grips are 1911 compatible.
I cannot think of a worst type of grip panel, slick surface.
If it was aggressive, i am shure Noir wouldnt be adjusting his grip between each shot.
His weak hand is constantly sliding off that slick grip and he is stick regripping.

no, not compatible with 1911 grips. you can get coonans with more aggressive checkered aluminum grips

When Gary recieve them in the Spring, i will get more mags and a set of those alu grip for my Coonan... JP.

I just bought Harry Callahan's Coonan because the deal was too good to pass up. I'm going to try for a 2nd honeymoon with this pistol. One thing I may do is make some custom grips from exotic woods which I've done for S&W and Ruger revolvers. Shouldn't be any more difficult than 1911 grips. More to come.

Yup, you snatched that one pretty quick... Since mine is gone, JP will have to let me shoot his Coonan :)
