I've always wanted one of these but always found something better suited for my money.
My boss recently sold his house and while cleaning out his shed came across this rifle. Wasn't sure what it was but he brought it to me and my brother since he knew we were into the shooting sports.
I always read these story's where someone gets a gun from someone who doesn't want or know what to do with it. I would have never guessed it would happen to me.
None of the numbers match and the stock is in rough shape. I'm looking to get a replacement stock I'm pretty excited.

What's the bore like? Stock looks like it's in rough shape... possibly sitting butt down on a soggy basement floor? Gives the rifle some character though...

Bore has very strong rifling till about 1.5" from the muzzle. Looks to me like it was a sniper?? Holes in the side of the reciever have been plugged and welded smoothed and reblued. The action and barrel are almost rust free. Just a bit that should clean up without issue. The bolt knob is rusted to a point where it won't clean up but the rest of the bolt is fine.

Is it just me or does this not look more like a M38 as the barrel looks shorter to me ....I have both versions and like my M38 more.

I've handled both it is a 91-30 for sure. It does look short in the pictures. I may take a stab at repairing that stock up. Paying ~$60 for a stock for a $100 gun just doesn't sit right.

Thanks Boyer I look forward to shooting it. (Perhaps this Saturday)

$100 gun? I thought you got it for free? If so a $60 stock brings the gun's total price to $60 :D

In that case....... For $40 more I could have 2! (Not that there is anything wrong with that)

I'm going to take a crack at fixing it up. I got nothin to lose. I will buy a new stock if it comes to that.

I'd probably strip and clean that stock as much as possible (like with a scrub brush and stripper), then soak it with raw linseed oil. Some of the worse cracks might close up a bit once the wood has absorbed the oil. I would abandon the idea of putting an original butt plate on before you even try it, though. Looks like a prime candidate for one of those rubber slip on jobs, or you could cut a couple inches off and put on a REALLY thick butt pad to try to get it back to length.

Nice find.....think it will make it into the MOA challenge??
lucky bugger........

I might have to give that a try....

I ran boiling water through it and the crud coming out of it was just gross. the rust on the reciever cleaned up almost effortlessly, the tarnish on the bolt knob also almost completly cleaned up, it's looking pretty good.
i'm leaving the stock sepporate to make sure as much moisture comes out of it before putting it back together, i'm thinking i'll start work on the stock early next week,
I did pick up a box of russian surplus on my way home and will be shooting it this saturday.
